Description of Work This position is posted for Internal NCDOR Permanent Employees Only. To be eligible for this position, you must be a current NCDOR employee. This position is Hybrid-Remote and may work out of Fayetteville, Greenville, Raleigh, Rocky Mount or Wilmington. Currently the NCDOR is accepting applications for a Senior Field Auditor. This position’s primary purpose is to serve as a subject matter expert (SME) in areas of non-compliance and various tax avoidance strategies. This includes identifying non-compliance through their understanding of tax laws and statistical analysis of audit findings. The Examination staff is responsible for auditing the books and records for all tax schedules of complex cases, including, but not limited to, cash intensive, indirect methodology and large-scale taxpayer audits. These audits may have a higher level of complexity with numerous technical issues with respect to organizational structure, accounting, tax law or investigative issues. Senior auditor positions will work with field staff to develop new initiatives. Senior auditors will work with junior auditors on complex audits and new initiatives as needed to develop staff in these areas. The responsibilities and duties of the field auditor can be categorized into three major areas: auditing, selection and planning and organization. Some overnight travel is required with this position. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies Comprehensive knowledge of accounting principles and auditing techniques. Comprehensive knowledge of state and federal tax code, issues, and case law. Extensive working knowledge of the revenue laws of North Carolina and the North Carolina administrative code. Demonstrated knowledge of a variety of accounting systems, including computerized systems, including those peculiar to certain businesses and industries in order to make complex tax determinations is required. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Bachelor’s degree in business administration, Economics, Accounting or related field with at least eighteen semester hours of accounting from an appropriately accredited institution and one year of experience as a Field Auditor I or equivalent; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
