TECHNICIAN, GRADE 60
•The Wilkes County Tax Department has an opening in the Listings Department. The work includes preparing listing forms, assisting the public with listing personal property, providing general information to the public on tax laws and policies, and preparing tax abstract books and records. The work also includes working in the NC Vehicle Tax System to maintain motor vehicle values and situs, valuing personal property and administering the tax exemption programs for the elderly, disabled citizens and veterans. Considerable tact and courtesy must be exercised in frequent public contact. Some independent judgment is required in the performance of duties; situations involving complex interpretations of tax laws and policies are referred to the supervisor. Work is performed under the supervision of the Listings Supervisor and is evaluated through observation, compliance with laws and policies, and feedback from taxpayers.
Knowledge, skills and abilities for the job include considerable knowledge of modern office practices and procedures including computer operations and applications related to the property listings and assessment. The applicant must be 10-key calculator proficient. Applicants must obtain certification as a Personal Property Appraiser within a 2-year period. Graduation from a two-year college and 1 to 3 years of experience in business administration or related field, or an equivalent combination of training and experience which provide the necessary skills and abilities needed to perform the job. Considerable experience involving customer service is required. Experience in tax assessment is desirable. The hiring rate is $32,669. Possession of a valid NC drivers license and a back-ground check are required.
