Friday Job Description:

The Revenue Specialist 1 is an entry-level position in a three-level revenue specialist series. This role involves cashiering and collecting revenues, performing routine tasks under limited supervision, and reporting to the Tax Manager. The specialist will handle various financial processes related to property tax, stormwater fee payments, business license applications, and customer service.

Essential Functions:
Payment Processing & Verification:

Receive property tax and stormwater fee payments via mail, in person, or over the phone. Verify payment accuracy, including currency, checks, and credit cards. Apply payments to appropriate parcels in the property tax system and produce daily balancing reports.

Business License Processing:

Process online electronic business license applications and verify proper classification according to State law. Ensure the business license is entered into the State site and contact customers regarding incomplete or incorrect information.

Customer Service:

Provide customer service via phone, walk-ins, or electronic methods for inquiries related to property taxes and business licenses. Assist citizens with requests for copies of tax bills/statements and utilize systems from Hamilton County and the State of TN Department of Revenue.

Cashier Activities:

Accurately maintain a balanced cash drawer and follow departmental cashiering protocols.

Senior Program Support:

Support the Tax Relief staff and senior citizens, including assisting with senior programs under the Senior Program Coordinator.

Mail Collection & Distribution:

Collect mail from the city mailbox at the post office and drop box located on Newby St, then distribute to Treasury staff.

Recordkeeping & Filing:

Maintain tax-related documents and information; scan, index, and file according to established guidelines and procedures.

Attendance & Interpersonal Relationships:

Meet regular attendance requirements and maintain positive relationships with staff, coworkers, managers, and citizens.

Minimum Qualifications:

High School Diploma or GED required.

Desired Skills:

Department-Specific Skills:

Knowledge of applicable terminology, basic accounting principles, customer service principles, cash handling procedures, and modern office procedures. Skill in using computers and related software applications, providing customer service, maintaining records, processing applications, performing calculations, and operating office equipment.

Career Ladder:

This is a career ladder position. The Revenue Specialist 1 will receive automatic progression to Revenue Specialist 2 after one year of service, provided the incumbent meets the required minimum qualifications and performance standards.

Promotional Eligibility:

Employees are not eligible for promotional opportunities if they have received a First Written Reprimand or higher in the last twelve months, are on a Last Chance Agreement, or have been on a Performance Improvement Plan (PIP) in the most recent twelve months.
