A high-growth national energy distribution company is seeking a Income Tax Senior Manager to join its corporate tax team. This role offers immediate visibility with senior leadership, exposure to complex, high volume tax operations, and a clear path to Director within 3 years (the current Director is planning retirement). This is a hands on income tax leadership role, deeply embedded in preparation, review, and planning of actual income tax returns, as well as leading and developing a team of 4-5 direct reports. The Income Tax Senior Manager will lead critical functions within the income tax department, overseeing complex compliance work, managing strategic tax planning initiatives, and mentoring a growing team. This role supports a fast-paced business environment with high volumes and technical complexity, requiring strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and a hands-on leadership style. The ideal candidate is both strategic and execution-focused—comfortable with high-level tax structuring, while also diving into the technical and detailed aspects of corporate and shareholder filings. This is a succession-track opportunity, with a clear path to promotion into a Director role within three years. Primary Responsibilities
Lead a key area of the tax function, delivering high-quality research, advanced reporting, and strategic analysis to support compliance and planning efforts.
Manage and review the preparation of complex income tax returns (monthly, quarterly, and annual), ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and alignment with current laws and business goals.
Mentor and supervise team members involved in identifying and resolving intricate tax entry discrepancies, while engaging with regulatory agencies as needed.
Coordinate tax audits at the federal, state, and local levels, compiling and managing relevant documentation and data, and addressing audit inquiries.
Communicate effectively with executive leadership regarding filing status, technical challenges, and critical audit issues.
Collaborate cross-functionally with departments such as Legal, Accounting, Supply/Distribution, and Construction to align tax strategies with operational goals.
Interpret evolving tax legislation and assess its impact on business operations, providing forward-looking recommendations to internal stakeholders.
Conduct modeling and impact analysis of proposed or newly enacted tax laws at both the corporate and shareholder level.
Proactively monitor tax regulations and industry developments to ensure the organization remains compliant and tax-efficient.
Drive process improvement initiatives, enhancing accuracy, efficiency, and scalability of tax workflows and systems.
Oversee team development and training, ensuring proficiency in core tax tools and technologies including OneSource and RIA Checkpoint.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required.
7-10+ years of income tax experience, including 1-3 years of team leadership or managerial responsibility.
Experience at the Senior Manager level in a public accounting firm is highly preferred.
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, with advanced Excel skills.
Experience with OneSource, Workday, and BNA Fixed Assets is a plus.
Strong attention to detail, ability to manage complex compliance projects, and excellent communication skills with executive stakeholders.
Must be promotable to Director level within 3 years, and ready to assume a leadership position over a growing tax team.
