With over 30 years in operation and an active portfolio of large-scale commercial projects ($30M-$60M each), this company is preparing for its next phase of financial structure and process maturity.
Overview:
Reporting directly to the CFO and ownership, this role will lead a lean accounting team—including a Director of AP & AR and three accounting clerks—and serve as the financial backbone of the organization. The Controller will oversee construction-specific accounting, drive process improvements, enhance internal controls, and prepare the company for formal audit readiness in the year ahead.
Key Responsibilities:
Manage all aspects of construction accounting, including work-in-progress (WIP) schedules and job costing Drive cash flow forecasting, tracking, and analysis across 10-15 active commercial projects Oversee month-end close, financial reporting, and general ledger accuracy Implement and enforce internal controls, accounting policies, and procedures Lead and mentor the accounting team; develop structure and accountability within the department Collaborate with project management and operations to align financial data with job progress Prepare for and manage external audits Support compliance, tax filings, and financial planning initiatives
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance required; CPA a plus 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, including prior construction industry experience (GC level strongly preferred) Deep understanding of WIP schedules, construction project accounting, and cash flow management Experience leading accounting teams and building/improving financial processes Hands-on systems experience with Sage and Procore preferred Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills Demonstrated job stability and long-term impact in previous roles
