Position Overview:
The Controller is a key member of the executive leadership team, responsible for overseeing all accounting and financial reporting activities to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local requirements, including Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) guidelines and Uniform Guidance (2 CFR Part 200). This position plays a critical role in financial strategy, risk management, and ensuring the long-term fiscal health of the organization.
Key Responsibilities:
Oversee all day-to-day accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, payroll, grants, and restricted funds accounting. Ensure accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting in accordance with GAAP and FQHC standards. Develop, implement, and monitor internal controls to safeguard assets and ensure accurate financial reporting. Lead the annual budgeting process and ongoing forecasting activities in collaboration with department heads and executive leadership. Prepare and present financial statements, dashboards, and reports to the CEO, Board of Directors, and funders. Manage and coordinate annual audits (including Single Audit) and cost reports required by HRSA, AHCA, and other regulatory bodies. Monitor cash flow, manage banking relationships, and ensure liquidity for operational needs. Ensure grant and contract compliance, including proper expense allocation and reporting for federal, state, and private funders. Supervise finance and accounting staff and provide training to enhance financial literacy across the organization. Maintain the Chart of Accounts and ensure accurate classification of expenditures and revenues. Support strategic planning and participate in decision-making related to capital investments, business expansion, and risk management.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required; Master’s degree or MBA preferred Minimum of five (5) years of progressive accounting experience, with at least two (2) years in a leadership role within a Federally Qualified Health Center, nonprofit healthcare organization, or similar environment. In-depth knowledge of
GAAP, OMB
Uniform Guidance (2 CFR 200), and HRSA requirements. Experience preparing for and managing A-133 Single Audits, Medicare/Medicaid cost reports, and 990 filings. Strong understanding of nonprofit and fund accounting principles. Experience with accounting software systems such as QuickBooks, MIP, or Sage Intacct preferred. Excellent leadership, analytical, and communication skills. Demonstrated ability to collaborate across departments and work effectively with diverse populations.
Preferred Skills:
Experience with FQHC-specific financial tools, UDS reporting, and health center operations. Proficiency in financial modeling and data visualization tools (e.g., Excel, Power BI).
