Primary Purpose of Job:
As the Assistant Controller, your primary responsibility is assisting the Controller in overseeing the finances for Midwest Petroleum’s retail locations and subsidiary components. This role is responsible for ensuring the accuracy and integrity of financial records through transaction management, audit support, license management, and financial reporting. By assisting with journal entries by organizing the reports into monthly and annual closing to then prepare comprehensive reports on income, expenses, and financial forecasts, to help achieve organizational efficiency. Additional responsibilities include government compliance, data analysis to drive business decisions, and continuous improvement of accounting systems and procedures. This position will support any training of new Finances members as needed.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Assist Controller in managing all accounting transactions. Ensures the integrity of accounting information by recording, verifying, consolidating, and entering transactions. Participate in internal and external auditing processes as needed. Reviews and approves accounts payable, accounts receivables, and journal entries. Provide detailed information about subsidiary accounts. Develop recommendations to optimize the company’s accounting systems and procedures and detect inaccuracies to help protect company assets. Collect, interpret, and report financial data to assess company financial health. Conduct monthly analyses of balance sheets and budget vs. actuals. Assist with monthly, quarterly, and annual closings. Prepare financial reports, statements, and forecasts regarding income, expenses, and earnings. Prepares special reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information and trends. Analyze data to uncover trends and insights that drive business decisions. Use data modeling techniques to enhance organizational effectiveness. Review financial statements for accuracy and clarity. Complies with federal, state, and local legal requirements by studying existing and new legislation; anticipating future legislations; enforcing adherence to requirements; filing financial reports; and advising management on needed actions. File necessary sales, fuel, tax documents, and any other important financial documents. Ensure compliance with GAAP or IFRS standards Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, establishing personal networks, and participating in professional societies. Recommend changes to accounting systems, ERP software, and financial workflows. Supervise, train, and mentor accounting team members to ensure accuracy and efficiency in financial operations. Protect operations by keeping financial information and plans confidential. Prepare various financial statements and reports through Excel spreadsheets. Prepare reports that summarize and forecast company business activity and financial position in areas of income, expenses, and earnings based on past, present, and projections. Handle any other work that can be assigned at the supervisor’s discretion. Physical Requirements This position is performed in a fast-paced environment, with frequent exposure to general office equipment, beverage equipment, coolers, and any other site-specific equipment/factors. You could also encounter exposure to hazardous materials and loud noises. This job requires the ability to walk, stand, bend, and reach regularly. Must be able to frequently be required to lift, push, or pull weight of at least 5 to 75 pounds. Ability to work in different Midwest Petroleum Stations.
