POSITION SUMMARY

The Controller is a mission-critical finance leader responsible for ensuring the integrity, accuracy, and efficiency of all financial operations across the Martha O’Bryan Center, including its nonprofit programs and two charter schools. Reporting directly to the CFO, the Controller leads daily financial management functions including accounting, budgeting, grants, financial reporting, and audit. This role acts as the financial operations lead for a $40 million annual budget across multiple entities, supporting program leadership and the finance team in ensuring strong fiscal stewardship and organizational sustainability.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned. Financial Operations & Reporting Direct all core accounting functions across the organization and schools, including general ledger, receivables/payables, cash management, and reconciliations. Lead preparation of timely and financial statements for both internal management and external stakeholders. Ensure full and accurate consolidation of financial data from charter schools and nonprofit program areas. Oversee the chart of accounts and fund/accounting structure to support multi-entity reporting and grant tracking. Budgeting & Forecasting Coordinate organization-wide budgeting process, ensuring participation from all departments and alignment with strategic priorities. Lead variance analysis and rolling forecasts, providing actionable insights and recommendations to leadership. Develop multi-year financial models in collaboration with the CFO and other senior leaders. Compliance & Audit Maintain internal controls and ensure adherence to GAAP and federal/state compliance regulations (including for government and restricted funding sources). Prepare for and lead annual independent audits, including separate audits for charter schools. Support preparation of IRS Form 990 and other required state/local filings. Revenue Management In collaboration with the Revenue Manager, program leads and development staff, oversee grant budgets, reporting, and restricted fund tracking. Ensure proper financial compliance and documentation for government contracts, private grants, earned revenue and charter school funding. Systems & Process Development Assess and upgrade financial systems and processes to increase automation, transparency, and efficiency. Support the CFO in project managing systems implementations and upgrades as needed. Document and maintain up-to-date finance standard operating procedures and workflows to ensure consistency and clarity. Leadership & Collaboration Serve as a critical member of the finance team and help foster a strong team culture. Provide excellent customer service to as a finance liaison to program directors, school leaders, and development staff. Provide finance training and support to program staff to strengthen their budgeting and compliance capacity.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and/or abilities required.

Education and Experience :

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required; CPA strongly preferred. Minimum 7-10 years of progressive finance experience, including nonprofit or education sector experience. Deep understanding of fund accounting, grant compliance, and charter/public funding. Experience leading financial operations in a complex, multi-entity environment. The above qualifications express the minimum standards of education and/or experience for this position. Knowledge and Abilities:

Demonstrated ability to manage audits, develop financial policies, and oversee budgeting processes. High level of integrity, accuracy, attention to detail, and confidentiality. Proficient in financial software (e.g., Blackbaud, QuickBooks, Sage Intacct, or similar) and advanced Excel skills. Experience with Aplos a significant plus. Strong interpersonal skills; excellent customer service skills. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to communicate financial concepts to non-financial staff.
