JOB SUMMARY
The Controller plans, organizes, directs, and controls the accounting and control function of the company, reports operational results, and provides chronological systems. Analyzes cost of sales, inventory, cost accounting records to assure and maintain the integrity and control of systems and programs used to accumulate and report cost data. Performs the quantitative analysis required for the strategic planning of the company and its investments, the administration of real estate transactions, and financing and refinancing of certain projects and lines of credit; prepares various reports for management and ownership.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Coordinates and administers an adequate plan for the control of operations. Such a plan provides profit planning, sales forecasts, budgets, cost standards and savings opportunities, together with the necessary controls to effectuate the plan. Compares performance with operating plans and standards. Provides reports and interprets the results of operations to all levels of management. This includes the formulation of accounting policies, the preparation of financial statements and operating data, the coordination of systems and procedures, and special reports as required. Forecasts short-range and long-range cash requirements and obligations, as a basis for maintaining adequate funds. Assures protection for the assets of the business through internal controls, internal auditing and ensuring proper insurance coverage. Keeps senior management informed of the company’s performance and provides advice on all financial matters. Executes cash disbursements for payment of company expenditures in accordance with disbursement policies. Monitors inventory levels and advises management regarding variances to budget. Develops and presents to senior management, matters requiring their decision. Assists in the analysis of new ventures to attempt to quantify the risk-return relationships. Assists in raising large amounts of debt-and-structuring financing and refinancing alternatives with financial institutions. Responsible for providing direction to Accountants; no supervisory responsibilities regarding office staff. Assist the President in high-level planning and decision making with other Executive Staff members.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITES
Develops and recommends budgets. Authorizes expenditures in accordance with budgets. Approves expenses of subordinates. Assures that qualified accounting personnel are selected and that orientation and on-the-job programs are conducted and effective. Develops an adequate plan for backup and succession of duties of accounting personnel. Assures that effective communications are maintained within area of responsibility. Where appropriate, informs employees as to plans and progress. Conducts employee discussion sessions at regular and frequent intervals. Ensures optimum performance of the function. Recommends and implements techniques to improve productivity, increase efficiencies, cut costs, take advantage of opportunities, and maintain company standards. Active in the decisions regarding reservations, governmental and customer relations.
QUALIFICATIONS
B.S. degree in Accounting or Finance. A minimum of four (4) years’ experience ideally gained through increasingly responsible management positions within Finance. A minimum of two (2) years’ recent experience as a Controller with responsibility for accounts, budgeting, cost accounting, credit and collections, and finance. Working knowledge of manual and automated accounting systems, well-developed financial analysis capabilities, and demonstrated ability to manage computer operations and applications. Well-developed administrative and management skills. Proven ability to recruit, train, and motivate personnel in order to balance staffing strength with profitability and growth. Superior numeric skills. Well organized. Strong analytical and reasoning abilities. High energy level, comfortable performing multifaceted projects in conjunction with normal activities. Superior interpersonal abilities. Ability to get along with diverse personalities, tactful, mature, flexible. Good reasoning abilities. Sound judgment.
