OVERVIEW

St. Thomas Aquinas’s athletic trainers are the primary and often sole medical caregivers providing rehabilitative care to injured high school athletes. Duties include prevention, evaluation, documentation, education, immediate care, athlete intake process for medical forms, coordination of care of athletic injuries, and clear, compassionate communication with coaches, athletes, and parents. The Athletic Trainer will work with coaches to evaluate athletes’ condition, establish diet, fitness, and treatment plans, and track progress toward health and fitness return to play. The Athletic Trainer assists athletes, coaches, and families in realizing their potential and possesses a strong understanding of sports-related injuries and treatments.

SPECIFIC DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Oversee the care, prevention, evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation of injuries to all student-athletes for all sports teams. Provides specific clinical care as assigned by the Medical Supervisor. Organizes and maintains all medical records in accordance with, ADOM, FHSAA, BCAA, federal and state regulations. Develops and maintains emergency action plans for all practice and competition venues in accordance with the school’s risk management guidelines and state regulations. Develops and maintains all department guidelines, policies and procedures in accordance with ADOM, FHSAA, BCAA, state, county, and national best practices. With Medical Supervisor, develop and maintain all service contracts Prepares clear and accurate reports regarding travel, expenditure reconciliations, supply inventory, and sponsorship product (ex., Gatorade). Maintains student-athlete insurance information and emergency contacts. Assists in developing and managing the Athletic Training Facility, budgets, and policies to maintain optimal health, safety, and welfare of all athletes. Coordinates the purchasing and use of all equipment and supplies needed for the operation of the athletic training facility, in accordance with the school’s policies. With Medical Supervisor, plans and coordinates physical examinations and screenings. Communicate empathetically with parents, physicians, and coaching staff regarding the injury status of athletes. Needs to be able to change your communication style to best communicate to each stakeholder. Makes appropriate physician referrals and appointments. Manages and Assists the school in hosting all athletic events. Assists the Athletic Director and coaching staff in determining whether the athletic facility is in an optimal and safe condition. Cleans and organizes the training room and inspects the cleanliness of the locker room to prevent infections. Helps monitor weather conditions and dangerous environments (humidity/lightning). Manages visiting team medical accommodations and needs. Ensures the Athletic Department staff maintains First-Aid, CPR, and AED certification. Responsible for implementation and rehearsal of health and safety best practices. Knowledge of rules and regulations set forth by the FHSAA and BCAA should be maintained, reviewed, and practiced to ensure compliance relative to those applicable duties. Oversees daily hydration for each sports team’s practice and game. Prevent athletic injuries through education and intervention.

NUMBER/DESCRIPTION OF PATIENTS RESPONSIBLE FOR

The training staff is responsible for over 900 athletes associated with 23 sports.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

Trainer will travel on the bus with the team on away games.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Work is in medium demand. Lifting 100 pounds maximum with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects. Medium strength is required to position patients for examination. May assist patients as needed, helping them on and off the exam table—the ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Will oversee part-time staff and student support staff. This will include scheduling staff and duties.
