Job Description
The Athletic Trainer 2 – Professional Sports will oversee all aspects of player health, injury prevention, and rehabilitation, with a focus on optimizing performance and ensuring the well-being of youth athletes. In addition, this role will also provide senior-level expertise for athletic training services and programs within the next academy program. This role is ideal for a licensed Athletic Trainer (ATC) with experience in elite sports environments. The position emphasizes collaboration with coaching staff, sports science personnel, and external medical providers to implement best practices in player care and development, aligned with the organization’s long-term player development goals.
Experience
Minimum of 3-5 years of experience working as an Athletic Trainer in a high-performance or youth sports environment, preferably soccer
Experience with injury prevention, rehabilitation, and return-to-play protocols
Familiarity with sports science tools (e.g. GPS monitoring, athlete management systems)
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work in a multidisciplinary team
Preferred Qualifications Experience working with youth athletes in an elite academy or developmental program
Knowledge of Major League Soccer Next policies and procedures
Bilingual (English/Spanish) is a plus
Education
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Athletic Training or a related field

Georgia Board of Athletic Trainers license
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association

Job Responsibilities
Player Health and Injury Prevention
Develop and implement injury prevention protocols, including warm-up routines, movement screenings, and mobility programs.
Provide on-field athletic training support during all training sessions and matches, including immediate care for acute injuries.
Conduct regular health and injury screenings to identify and address potential risk factors.
Injury Management and Rehabilitation
Lead the evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation of player injuries, ensuring a safe and efficient return-to-play process.
Design and oversee individualized rehabilitation plans tailored to each athlete’s needs.
Collaborate with external medical providers and specialists to coordinate advanced care when necessary.
Performance Optimization
Assist in monitoring player workloads using sports science tools (e.g. GPS, heart rate monitors) to inform training loads and recovery strategies.
Support strength and conditioning efforts by collaborating with performance staff to align physical development with injury prevention strategies.
Educate players on recovery protocols, including hydration, nutrition, and sleep.
Leadership and Collaboration
Serve as the primary point of contact for all medical and performance-related concerns within the academy program.
Serve as resource and mentor to other staff, providing orientation, in-services, and clinical guidance as requested.
Work closely with academy coaches, the Technical Director, and other performance staff to align strategies for player development.
Collaborate with the First Team Head Athletic Trainer to ensure consistency in medical and performance standards across the club.
Liaise with the Second Team medical and performance staff to facilitate smooth transitions for academy players progressing through the player pathway.
Build strong relationships with parents and guardians to provide updates on player health and progress.
Sports Science and Data Management
Utilize athlete monitoring systems to track and analyze injury trends, workload data, and recovery metrics.
Maintain accurate and confidential records of all player injuries, treatments, and medical clearances.
Share relevant data and insights with the coaching and performance staff to inform training and match preparation.
Education and Advocacy
Educate athletes on injury prevention, self-care, and wellness practices.
Promote a positive culture of health and safety within the academy environment.
Stay updated on current trends and best practices in sports medicine and performance.
Operational Management
Manage medical supplies, equipment, and budgets for the academy program.
Ensure compliance with all MLS Next guidelines and protocols related to athlete health and safety.
Develop emergency action plans for training and match venues.
