Job Description

UNC Hospital’s Department of Audiology provides a full range of diagnostic and therapeutic services to inpatient and outpatient populations. Our department consists of 28 audiologists who work collaboratively with UNC’s Department of Otolaryngology

  • Head and Neck Surgery, all with the common mission to provide outstanding hearing care to all our patients and their families.

Our department’s services are currently offered at six clinical locations: N.C. Children’s Hospital [Chapel Hill], UNC Hospitals Audiology at Meadowmont [Chapel Hill], UNC Hospitals Hearing & Voice Center at Carolina Crossing [Chapel Hill], UNC Hospitals Audiology at Pittsboro [Pittsboro], UNC Hospitals Audiology at Lake Boone Trail [Raleigh] and UNC Audiology Services at Cary [Cary]. The Department of Audiology at UNC Hospitals offers internships for 1 st

  • 3 rd year AuD students as well as a 12-month, full-time 4th year AuD externship providing the AuD student a well-rounded experience with the opportunity to work with a wide variety of patient populations with a range of hearing disorders.

Externship opportunities are available with a pediatric focus at our N.C. Children’s Hospital, Meadowmont and Lake Boone Trail locations, or an adult focus at our Carolina Crossing, Pittsboro and Cary locations. Our N.C. Children’s Hospital, Meadowmont and Lake Boone Trail locations focus on pediatrics including diagnostic assessment of children from infancy through the teen years and amplification/treatment of hearing loss. Externs rotate between our three pediatric focused sites. Our previous externs have gone on to careers working in hospitals, private clinics, research, academic education, and manufacturer positions. Graduates of our program will have extensive experience with complex patient care in a collaborative, multi-disciplinary team. We are looking for thoughtful, hardworking candidates who are committed to evidence-based and patient-centered care. Anticipated Salary :

Current 2025-2026 pay rate is $10.33/hour (based on a 40-hour work week for one year; with holidays and leave time, this should equate to ~$20,000). Position has historically been a paid position and that is the goal for 2026-2027. At this time, we cannot confirm if these positions will be paid. Future positions do not get approved by hospital this far in advance. We will need to wait to submit for approval late 2025/early 2026.

Caseload/responsibilities :

All pediatrics , includes: Diagnostic assessment of children from infancy through the teen years Natural sleep and sedated ABRs Two-tester behavioral hearing assessment for children of all ages In-patient coverage at the main UNC hospital campus Support CI candidacy evaluations for patients < 2 years in conjunction with colleagues at the Children's Cochlear Implant Center at UNC ( note, this clinic is separate from the CCIC at UNC ) Hearing aid selection, fitting, verification, and follow up (air

  • and bone-conduction devices) Newborn hearing screenings in the
UNC NICU
