Job Description

The Jefferson Balance and Hearing Center at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital is a comprehensive adult audiology practice located in the heart of Philadelphia. Our goal is to provide excellent patient centered care through an interdisciplinary team approach including audiologists, audiology technicians, nurses, and physicians. Thomas Jefferson University Hospital is excited to offer 5 externship opportunities that will allow each doctoral extern to rotate between our various Jefferson Otolaryngology clinical sites for the 2026-2027 academic year. (Hospital/Academic/Satellite Clinics): 5 Full Time Positions; Jefferson Balance & Hearing Center

D. externship beginning in May 2026 & ending May 2027, pending program requirements. Externs are provided with supervision by experienced audiologists with ASHA CCC-A and/or ABA board certification in audiology, in addition to Pennsylvania and/or New Jersey licensing in audiology. Supervision from an audiologist with the

ASHA CCC-A

is guaranteed. Bachelor’s degree is required. Applicants must be currently enrolled in a clinical doctorate (Au.

D.) degree in audiology through an accredited program. Academic requirements must be met for degree completion prior to starting the 4th year externship. Interested students are welcomed to attend our Open House on September 10, 2025 at our Honickman Center in Philadelphia, PA. Spots are limited! Yes Externship site expects the extern to have mastered these skills before they begin their clinical externship:

  • Take a complete case history
  • Strong report writing skills
  • Competently perform audiometric evaluations to include tympanometry, acoustic reflex testing, and OAEs
  • Strong knowledge of hearing aids (evaluations, fitting, and troubleshooting)
  • Working knowledge of vestibular testing, including vHIT and rotary chair
  • Basic skill in evoked potential testing (ABR, ECochG, VEMP)
  • Basic knowledge of cochlear implant candidacy, testing, troubleshooting, and programming
  • Basic knowledge of tinnitus management and counseling Externship site expects the extern to learn/demonstrate these skills during their clinical externship:
  • Proficient report writing skills
  • Mastery of basic hearing evaluations, tympanometry, acoustic reflex testing, and OAEs
  • Proficiency in all aspects of hearing aids (evaluations, fitting, and troubleshooting)
  • Proficiency in vestibular assessment
  • Proficiency in evoked potentials
  • Competence in cochlear implant evaluation, programming, counseling, and device follow-up
