Description This position will work as a laboratory manager for Dr. A. Wayne Orr’s research laboratory studying the mechanisms regulation the pathogenesis of cardiometabolic diseases, including atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and metabolism-associated steatohepatitis. The position will function in a managerial capacity for general laboratory function, including ordering, laboratory organization, and compliance with assurance committees, and supervision of laboratory staff. In addition, the person will function as an independent researcher managing a variety of animal experiments and subsequent tissue or plasma analysis.

Essential Position Functions and Duties:

Administrative/Clerical Functions:

Maintains chemical/reagent inventories and the associated MSDS sheets. Orders chemical supplies and maintains a logbook of all orders, receive dates, and price information. Maintains a record or log of all experiments for which he/she is directly responsible and the data obtained. Enters data into spreadsheets for either the purpose of graphing or presenting the data and for statistical analysis. Provides clerical support in the preparation of grants, abstracts for meetings, posters, papers, and of reports and applications as required by the various assurance committees administered by grants administration. Gathers papers from the literature in the library and performs literature searches. 50%

Research Functions:

Maintaining and monitoring mutant mouse breeding colonies. Assisting in animal protocols such as surgeries, necropsy, and/or obtaining tissue specimens. Bleeding and sacrifice of animals as necessary. Collecting and processing experimental specimens (e.g. Preparing tissue for use in downstream research investigations such as PCR, Cell culture, etc.). Performing direct and indirect immunohistochemistry on cell culture and tissue specimens. Performing DNA and RNA extractions from cell cultures and mouse tissues. Performing cDNA cloning into viral vector systems and eukaryotic expression vectors. Developing and performing DNA and RNA electrophoresis. Developing and performing PCR and RT-PCR. Performing total protein assays, ELISA assays, SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of protein specimens, protein immunoprecipitations, Western blots using chemiluminescent immunodetection methods, flourimetric and/or colorimetric enzyme assays. Maintaining and utilizeing a parallel plate flow chamber for mechanical stimulation of cells in culture. 25%

Supervision and Management Functions:

Train and provide guidance to research scientists, physicians, postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, and all levels of research staff members and technicians in the area of small animal surgical techniques, endothelial cell culture, and various laboratory procedures including data analysis and presentation. Supervision of laboratory personnel. Explain the purpose of experiments and outline steps to follow to complete the assigned tasks; answer questions or resolve problems regarding routine or more complex duties ranging from custodial care of laboratory, preparation of laboratory solutions, using proper laboratory safety procedures, analysis of results, and maintaining animal colonies. Assembling, operating, and maintaining laboratory equipment. Employee must be willing to work with biological agents, laboratory chemicals, radioactive and hazardous materials. Assuming responsibility for the safe handling and disposal of hazardous drugs, chemical and radioactive materials. Determines type and quantity of surgical, research, and animal supplies to be requested for conducting experiments to assure timely achievements of laboratory activities.

MARGINAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB

5% Performs other duties as instructed by the Principle Investigator. Qualifications The applicant must meet one of the following: Bachelor’s Degree in biological or chemical sciences or a related area of study from an accredited school with at least three (3) years of relevant laboratory experience.
Master’s Degree in biological or chemical sciences or related area of study from an accredited school with at least two (2) years of relevant laboratory
Preferred Qualifications Additional experience in the following: animal handling and surgery, mouse models of diabetes and atherosclerosis, immunohistochemistry, fluorescence microscopy, PCR, endothelial cell culture.
