Job Summary:
This role reports directly to theSenior Laboratory Director and is pivotal in advancing theoperations of the HLA laboratory. The position combines clinical,administrative, and research responsibilities, ensuring thedelivery of high-quality laboratory services in alignment with ASHIstandards at the American Red Cross. The main focus of this lab isBMT, NGS, and Chimerism.
Key Responsibilities:
Excellence inLaboratory Quality Assurance

Develop Comprehensive TestingSystems:
Implement robust systems to ensure the highest laboratoryquality standards across all testing phases—pre-analytic, analytic,and post-analytic. This includes optimizing sample handling,ensuring precision in test execution, and enhancing accuracy inreporting results.
- Achieve Established Turnaround Times (TAT):
Lead efforts to maintain and exceed target turnaround times for labresults, supporting critical patient care and clinicaldecision-making. Driving Innovation in Immunogenetics andHistocompatibility Research•
Research Design & Development:
Spearheaded research initiatives that advance the fields ofimmunogenetics and histocompatibility, in alignment with themission of the American Red Cross Blood Services. Developcutting-edge projects that contribute to scientific knowledge andclinical practice.•
Validation of Advanced Testing Procedures:
Lead the development, rigorous validation, and implementation ofinnovative testing methodologies. Ensure new procedures arethoroughly validated to meet clinical service standards locally andnationally. Clinical Expertise & Problem Resolution

Review andOversight of Clinical Reports:
Apply expert judgment to reviewclinical test reports, addressing complex or atypical cases withprecision. Serve as a go-to resource for resolving challengingclinical testing issues, whether from transplantation partners orin-house teams.

Continuous Professional Development:
Stay at theforefront of the field by engaging with the latest scientificresearch, presenting findings at professional conferences, andparticipating in national and international workshops. Leadershipin Staff Development and Continuing Education

Initiate and oversee projects aimed at enhancingtest procedures, techniques, and reagent development. Drivecontinuous improvement initiatives that may expand the laboratory’sclinical service offerings.

Data Analysis & Project Adjustment:
Analyze data and project outcomes to refine methodologies andensure successful implementation, adjusting strategies as needed tooptimize results. Operational Leadership & Policy Development

Establish and Refine Laboratory Policies:
Develop and implementlab-specific policies while ensuring alignment with broaderorganizational practices. Make strategic recommendations to enhanceoperational efficiency and compliance.

Business Development &Client Engagement:
Actively pursue new business opportunities,including securing contracts and expanding lab services. Cultivatepartnerships with area and national hospitals to strengthen thelaboratory’s market presence. Support for Laboratory LeadershipContinuity
- Provide Backup to the
Senior Laboratory Director:
Serve as a reliable backup to the senior lab director in keyfunctional areas. Leverage cross-training and expertise to ensureseamless lab operations and leadership coverage.
Standard Schedule:
M-F Day Shift Qualifications:
- Ph.D. or MD/DO with ASHICertification as a Director.
- Minimum of 4 years of hands-onexperience in all phases of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics,including managing operations in a high-volume clinical HLA testinglaboratory, or an equivalent combination of education and relatedexperience.
- At least 2 years of leadership experience, withproven abilities in managing teams and lab operations.
- Proficiency in databases, IT systems, and genomic software relevantto HLA and immunogenetics testing.
- Strong analytical skills witha demonstrated attention to detail.
- Excellent written and verbalcommunication abilities, with a focus on collaboration andrelationship-building.
- Strong teaching and coaching skills tosupport staff development and continuous improvement.
- Ability towork both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team tosolve complex clinical and operational challenges.

(PreferredQualifications): Extensive scientific knowledge and advancedtechnical skills in Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics, withexpertise in the following areas:
- HLA Serology and MolecularGenetics, including Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS).
- PlateletSerology and HLA Antibody Screening/Identification.
- FlowCytometry Crossmatch Techniques.
- Chimerism Studies fortransplantation monitoring and diagnostics.
- Strong focus ondetail, accuracy, and efficiency in both scientific andcustomer-facing responsibilities.
- BMT, NGS, and Chimerismexperience. Proven track record of delivering excellent customerservice, with a commitment to maintaining a positive andprofessional image in all interactions. Strong focus on detail,accuracy, and efficiency in both scientific and customer-facingresponsibilities.
- Combination of candidate’s education and generalexperience satisfies requirements so long as the total years equateto the description’s minimum education and general experience yearscombined (Management experience cannot be substituted).
