MSRB 1, Suite 301, Research Drive, Durham, NC, 27710 We have an outstanding opportunity for an experienced Laboratory Manager to join the team of Dr. Cagla Eroglu at Duke University. The position provides excellent opportunities for performing operational management and is suited for a highly productive and dedicated individual with experience managing a large, diverse, fast-paced lab. The Eroglu laboratory investigates the roles of glial cells, particularly astrocytes, in the development, remodeling, and function of synaptic circuits in health and disease. Research elucidated a number of important molecular mechanisms that underlie astrocytic control of synapse formation and remodeling. Furthermore, their work revealed that loss of glial control of synapse formation is an underlying pathological mechanism in a number of neurological disorders, including autism, neuropathic pain, and neurodegeneration. This is a critical role where you will serve as a trusted leader of day-to-day lab operations.

What you’ll do: Manage day-to-day activities within the laboratory to keep everything running efficiently including operation of essential equipment, coordinating repairs, maintaining adequate stock of supplies, coordinating with account manager for budgeting, and other operational tasks. Serve as the primary liaison and “go-to person” between the lab, HHMI, and host institution administrative offices on issues such as annual renewals, space management, fixed asset inventories, purchasing and use of host accounts. Plan for and provide working supervision to Research Technicians contributing to laboratory management. Maintain and update laboratory guidelines, procedures, and documentation through a lens of continuous process improvement. Writing animal protocols and ensuring compliance with institutional and Federal guidelines. Manage lab organization, meeting schedules, and coordinate general lab operations. Provide direct administrative support to Dr. Eroglu by helping to manage her calendar, coordinate travel, and process reimbursements, as needed. Onboarding of new personnel and oversight of all lab personnel (approximately 25 team members), including ensuring their training and compliance with all internal and external governing bodies.

What you bring:

A bachelor’s degree in the sciences; or an equivalent combination of education and related work experience. Three or more years of lab experience, preferably with experience in a management capacity, including supervisory experience. Excellent verbal and written communication skills and a high attention to detail. Strong sense of self-motivation, integrity, trustworthiness, and ability to work in an environment with people from a wide variety of backgrounds. Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities.

Physical Requirements:

Remaining in a normal seated or standing position for extended periods of time; reaching and grasping by extending hand(s) or arm(s); dexterity to manipulate objects with fingers, for example using a keyboard; communication skills using the spoken word; ability to see and hear within normal parameters; ability to move about workspace. The position requires mobility, including the ability to move materials weighing up to several pounds (such as a laptop computer or tablet). Work may involve possible exposure to malodorous vapors, low dose radiation, contamination by toxic chemicals and acids and presence of carcinogenic substances.
