The lab supervisor works under indirect supervision in performing assigned duties and responsibilities according to the specifications outlined in Coastal Fertility Specialists Manuals.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Bachelor’s, Master’s or Ph.D./M.D.Degree in Biological Sciences, Medical Technology or equivalent At least 5 yrs exp in human IVF including Micromanipulation Experience as a team leader, preferred. Knowledge of all of the following: Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint. Strong grasp of computer network setup and operation. Installation of computer programs and basic troubleshooting skills. Microscope maintenance (alignment of optics and cleaning of objectives). HVAC design and general operation of air system serving lab. Operation of backup generator unit serving vital instrumentation within lab. Knowledge, operation and creation of effective lab alarm systems. (LN2 alarms, Incubator alarms, gas tank alarms.)

Duties/Responsibilities:

Knowledge of all technical and operational procedures in the lab Perform all lab procedures with expertise. Oversee lab personnel, including scheduling and monitoring performance of procedures. Ensure proper maintenance and use of all lab equipment. Maintain acceptable levels of inventory. Organize and maintain records, including patients test reports, IVF related procedures (IVF cycles, embryo freezing and thawing records) and invoices related to purchase of inventory. Interpret and analyze test results in a timely manner when reporting to referring physicians. Keep abreast of the latest research, evaluate and initiate new procedures. Respond to problems arising with lab equipment that may occur during the night and/or weekends. Lab equipment, supplies and facilities must be clean and well organized. Through continual testing and retesting, the lab supervisor should ensure the highest order of quality control. The lab supervisor and director must work together to conduct ongoing research projects and should report the results to their colleagues in the form of journal articles, oral presentations or poster presentations. Assist the financial department in assuring appropriate and timely billing for services. Act as a liaison between the lab and other departments to disseminate information and communicate areas for continual quality improvement. Intermediate to advanced computer skills. Protocol Familiarization – Study, review and have accountability for: Embryology Protocol Manual, Andrology Protocol Manual, Lab Equipment Manuals, Quality Management Protocol (which includes quality assurance, quality control, and quality improvement), Risk Management Protocol, Emergency Manual, Computer Protocol Manual, Employee Handbook, Sample Accession, Identification, Labeling & Custody, ASRM & SART requirements, FDA requirements, State Tissue Bank License requirements, & If applicable – CLIA & CAP requirements

Care and Use of Lab Equipment 14. In Vitro Fertilization 15. Embryo Freezing / Thawing 16. Continuing Ed 17. Work Schedule – Monday through Friday, evenings and alternating weekends when lab procedures are required for IVF and possible lab emergencies. 18.

Utilize current and future technology to the fullest extent possible to make policies, procedures, and personnel as efficient, effective and mistake free as possible. National Certification Requirements The Lab Supervisor should have and maintain certification as an AAB Board of Registry Embryology Technical Supervisor (TS) certification.
