SCOPE OF POSITION

The Medical Technologist II, in collaboration with Laboratory Management participates in advanced tasks, along with performing routine duties in their assigned department.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Have knowledge of and follow current CAP, JCAHO, CLIA and State guidelines. Performs testing, calibrations, preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, and general care of the equipment as defined in the department procedure manuals. Under the direction of the department Team Leader or Designee, monitors assays and takes appropriate measures to correct QC deviations. Evaluates the validity of results, making judgments regarding accuracy and precision based on established protocols, and refers to the Team Leader or Designee any problem beyond the scope of the Technologist. Maintain current knowledge and employ proper application of hospital infection control (i.e., Universal Precautions). Participates in continuing education to maintain professional development and competency. Works effectively as a part of the team to meet department goals and objectives. Communicates in a professional manner.
Demonstrates good customer service. Participates in validations for new instrumentation and/or new testing.
Demonstrates leadership qualities by mentoring new and current Medical Technologists.
Trains new employees.
Works with department leadership to address areas in need of improvement.
Helps Team Lead to maintain regulatory requirements. (i.e., AMR’s, CAP surveys, Instrument to instrument, etc.)
Helps Team Lead maintain staff competency within the department(s).
Coordinates implementation protocol of new lots of reagents (for example, PT and PTT rollover).
Coordinates with other lab departments, including central processing to help cover breaks
Coordinate workflow when short-staffed and assist with finding coverage for tardies and absences.
Considered Key Point of contact for nursing supervisors or clinicians in the absence of lab administration.
In collaboration with Team Leader, may assist in writing or revising procedures.
May collaborate with IT during validation process. Performs all other duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS

Good communication skills.
Demonstrates advanced computer skills (such as Excel, Word, statistical calculators , etc). Medical Technologist ASCP or equivalent.
BS degree in Laboratory Science or equivalent.
5 years clinical laboratory experience.
