JOB SUMMARY
Performs clinical lab procedures, quality assuranceand instrument maintenance.
SUMMARY OF ESSENTIAL JOB
FUNCTIONSRecognizes test inconsistencies and takes appropriate correctiveaction. Verifies and calls critical results to physicians or nursesimmediately and according to lab policy. Reviews results forclerical accuracy prior to completing. Runs quality control testsaccording to lab policy and maintains appropriate data recording.
Takes appropriate corrective action when quality control resultsare outside acceptable limits. Documents action taken. Seeks helpfrom lead technician, technical supervisor, or lab director asrequired. Holds patient results until quality control standardsmeet agency and facility guidelines. Reports unresolved errors tothe lead technician, technical supervisor, or lab director.
Observes and follows department preventive maintenance schedules.
Documents all instrument checks, preventive maintenance, problemsand corrective action taken. Recognizes, analyzes, and takescorrective action to resolve instrument/clinical problems. Reportsunresolved instrument/clinical problems to the lead technician,technical supervisor, or lab director Checks outstanding tests listin a timely manner and troubleshoots/follows through on outstandingtests which appear to have not been collected/received whenexpected Obtains blood specimens and collects non-blood specimenssuch as urine, sputum, and throat swabs for laboratory testingAnswers phone calls – record request for blood collection, answersgeneral questions concerning test orders and collection takesmessages and routes calls. Uses at least 2 patient identifiers oneach patient encounter. Explains procedures/process beforeobtaining specimens Offers additional assistance; seeks to ensurepatient satisfaction before concluding encounter. BASIC SKILLSBasic computer knowledge and ability to touch type. Ability todiscern color. Experience with lab information systems or thewillingness to learn. Ability to work on several projects orcommittee if there is a desire Ability to utilize hands onknowledge from theory
EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIRED MT
(ASCP), MLS (ASCP), or equivalent certification. Bachelors DegreeMedical Technology or chemical, physical or biological science.
Education in all age groups ranging from newborn to the geriatricpopulation obtained either in a school education or subsequenttraining.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Able to communicate effectively inEnglish, both verbally and in writing. Additional languages a plus.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
