Description The role of a Technologist entails performing routine chemical, microscopic, and bacteriological laboratory tests using laboratory protocols. The position necessitates specialized technical expertise in collecting, handling, and preparing specimens for examination. The Technologist is expected to regularly interact with patients, their families, and healthcare professionals and always maintain a professional demeanor. Knowledge of and complies with applicable federal and state laws.
Complies with mandatory regulatory and credentialing requirements and participates in continuous improvement activities as assigned to ensure health care service quality.
Always maintain patient confidentiality. Perform venipunctures on patients efficiently, professionally, and courteously. Prepare and send specimens for reference laboratory testing per specific reference laboratory policy.
Performs tests and reports results as ordered by physicians efficiently and knowledgeably per specific laboratory policy.
Prepare and maintain laboratory reagents and supplies per manufacturer guidelines. Compile records about test results, quality control, specimen referrals, daily worksheets, and specimen logs.
Identify, document, and notify Supervisory Staff of all system deviations from the laboratory’s performance specifications. Maintain quality of equipment and instruments by adhering to manufacturer recommendations regarding maintenance and operation of laboratory instrumentation—follow-up of instrumentation needing repair by manufacturer and documentation of service.
Participate in quality assessment and performance improvement activities and monitor them per laboratory policy.
Maintain current license issued by the Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners.
Maintain a clean, safe environment for processing lab procedures per lab policy.
Maintain records demonstrating that proficiency testing samples are tested like patient samples.
Maintain records demonstrating proficiency testing was performed and submitted per Proficiency Testing Agency Standards.
Perform only those tests authorized and approved by the Laboratory Director.
Completion of other assigned tasks as necessary. The statements mentioned above outline the general duties necessary to describe the essential functions of this position. Requirements Education:

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited medical technology program and equivalent education for Medical Technologist licensure.

Licenses/Certificates:

MT, ASCP, or equivalent
Clinical Laboratory Scientist-Generalist license issued by LSBME.

Working Conditions:

Exposed to infection from disease-bearing specimens.
Exposed to odorous chemicals and specimens.
Must be able to take On-Call pay.

Physical Requirements:

Color Vision—the ability to distinguish and identify different colors.
Manual dexterity and mobility
Moderate physical effort (lift/carry up to 25 lbs.).
Near Acuity—the ability to see clearly at 20 inches or less.
Occasional prolonged standing/walking
