This position is in the Public Health Laboratory’s Newborn Screening program area located at 8231 Parklane Rd, Columbia, SC 29203.
Newborn Screening Laboratory. Methodologies utilized include Iso-electric focusing, HPLC, tandem Mass Spectrometry, PCR, and automated analyzers. Performs required maintenance on laboratory instrumentation, both scheduled and as needed maintenance. Must be able to troubleshoot problems.
Performs quality control as required, and according to protocol, reviews quality control for acceptability.
Prepares various reagents needed for testing specimens. Accurately reviews and report patient test results and communicates abnormal test results, according to approved laboratory procedures. Works both independently and as part of a team. Participates in quality assurance activities within the laboratory.
Minimum and Additional Requirements
State Minimum Requirements:
A bachelor’s degree in a related medical or scientific discipline; or an associate degree or equivalent training in a related medical, scientific or technical discipline and journey-level work experience in a related field.
Institutions of Higher Learning must be recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.
Agency Additional Requirements:
A bachelor’s degree in a chemical, physical, biological, or clinical laboratory science or medical technology from an accredited institution; or an associate degree in a laboratory science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution. Must be able to work rotating Saturdays and holidays.

Preferred Qualifications
A Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) or Medical Technologist (MT) degree with American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) certification, and at least one (1) year of clinical laboratory experience; or a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) degree with ASCP certification and at least one (1) year of clinical laboratory experience.
