Job SummaryPrimarilyresponsible for microscopic screening for detection of abnormalhuman cells and organisms, assisting with cytopreparations and FineNeedle Aspiration collections as needed, and computer result/dataentry related to test orders and reporting. Will maintain athorough knowledge of conditions appropriate to laboratory testperformance, including specimen collection, transport preservation,processing, staining, screening, computer proficiency, specimenstorage/disposal, and filing of slides/requisitions/QA materials.
Will develop and maintain a high standard of operation and will acta resource person for new employees. The Cytotechnologist willreport directly to the Cytology Supervisor and Pathologist incharge of the Cytology Division.

Demonstrates competence to provide developmentallyappropriate care/treatment for the following patient population:infant (birth to 1 year), child (1 year through 12 years),adolescent (13 years through 17 years), adult (18 years to 65years), and geriatric (over 65 years).Microscopic evaluate and markany abnormalities or significant findings with appropriate inkmarkings. Write diagnostic impression in appropriate form.

Directly report all negativecases with the exception of the 10% of total negatives that arereferred to the pathologist for a second review as pat of qualityassurance program.
Refer all screened gynecologic cases evaluated asBCC and above to the pathologist along with the writtenimpression.
Refer all non-gynecological cases with or withoutabnormal findings to the pathologist along with the writtenimpression.
Retrieve clinical information and previous historyreports to attach to referred cases as appropriate.
Confer withpathologist on daily cases and provide assistance asrequested.
Place all finished paperwork and slides in appropriateplace for filing.
Cytopreparatory functions including specimenreceipt, identification, accessioning, processing by direct smearpreparation, centrifugation, cytocentrifugation, cell blockpreparation or thin-layer preparation.
Staining with appropriatestandard series of solutions, coverslipping and labeling ofslides.
Perform periodic maintenance of stainline, instruments,equipment and microscopes and document such activities.
Preparereagent solutions as needed.
Assist with training of new personnelinsuring high standard of performance of their duties.
Assist withevaluation of new equipment.
Duties & ResponsibilitiesProvideassistance to the Cytology Supervisor with the collection anddocumentaion of QA data, writing or revising of procedures asassigned, and calculation of workload statistics.
Assist CytologySupervisor as requested in monitoring cost anaylsis data relativeto procedures reagents, equipment, etc.
Inform personnel responsiblefor ordering supplies of any observed shortages.
Presentation ofinservices for other laboratory sections when changing proceduresthat may involve that section.
Performs assigned duties efficientlyand effectively in a timely organized manner.
Performs all otherduties as assigned by authorized personnel or as required in anemergency, e.g. fire or disaster.
Promote smooth exchange ofspecimens, reports and phone communication between nursing service,medical staff, physician office personnel and cytologydepartment.
Informs other laboratory personnel of circumstances thatmay effect the quality of work.
Active participation the LMC ServiceExcellence Program with on-going demonstration of activecontributions to service excellence relative to cytologyservices.

Ensure Hazardous Waste or Hazardous Waste Pharmaceuticalsare discarded, stored, and managed with other compatible wastestreams in containers that are properly labeled and closed prior tobeing shipped offsite for proper disposal. Initial RCRA training isreceived within 6 months of the hire date and continuing withannual RCRA training.
