Job Summary:
The Dental Assistant plays a vital role in supporting the dentist during patient procedures, ensuring the smooth operation of the dental office, and providing a positive experience for patients. This position involves preparing treatment rooms, assisting with dental procedures, taking X-rays, maintaining instruments and equipment, and providing excellent patient care before, during, and after treatment.
Roles and Responsibilities:
1.
Chairside Assistance:
Assist the dentist during various procedures, such as fillings, crowns, extractions, root canals, and cleanings. Prepare the patient and the treatment room for procedures, ensuring all necessary tools and materials are ready. Provide suction, hold instruments, and pass tools as needed during treatments. Ensure patient comfort by offering support, instructions, and reassurance throughout the procedure. Prepare dental materials (e.g., mixing fillings, impressions, etc.) as required by the dentist. 2.
Patient Care & Education:
Greet patients and make them feel comfortable before treatment begins. Assist patients with getting settled in the dental chair and prepare them for examinations. Provide post-treatment instructions and care guidance to patients, including aftercare for dental procedures. Educate patients on proper oral hygiene techniques and preventative care. 3. Radiology (X-Rays): Take dental X-rays (bitewings, panoramic, and periapical) as required, following appropriate safety protocols. Process and maintain patient radiographs according to office procedures and regulations. Ensure X-ray equipment is functioning properly and report any malfunctions. 4.
Sterilization & Infection Control:
Ensure all dental instruments are sterilized and sanitized according to infection control guidelines. Disinfect treatment rooms and other areas of the office between patients to maintain a clean and safe environment. Follow all OSHA and HIPAA guidelines for patient safety and confidentiality. 5.
Administrative Support:
Ensure proper documentation of patient records, X-rays, and treatment plans. Coordinate with the front office staff to optimize patient scheduling and flow. Enforce compliance with OSHA, HIPAA, and state dental regulations. Work closely with the dentist, hygienists, and front office staff to ensure smooth patient flow and optimal care. Attend team meetings and continuing education sessions to stay current on dental techniques and office protocols. Help with patient scheduling, confirmations, and check-in/check-out procedures as needed. Update patient records and assist with filing or documentation of treatment plans and notes. Maintain inventory of dental supplies and assist with ordering when needed. 6.
Equipment Maintenance:
Ensure all dental equipment is in good working order and assist with equipment maintenance and troubleshooting. Set up and break down operatories (treatment rooms) between patients to ensure a smooth transition between appointments.
Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent required; certification in dental assisting preferred (e.g., CDA, RDA). CPR certification (or willingness to obtain upon hire). Proven experience as a dental assistant, with knowledge of dental procedures and terminology. Familiarity with dental software and patient record-keeping systems (Eaglesoft is preferred) Strong communication skills with a compassionate and friendly demeanor. Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment while maintaining attention to detail. Strong teamwork ethic and the ability to follow instructions. Ability to stay calm and professional under pressure, especially in emergency situations. Bilingual (Spanish or other languages) is a plus. Experience with patient education or dental treatment planning is a plus
