Job Description
Job Duties:
This position is located in Spruce Pine, NC. The purpose of this position is to function as a dental hygienist in the School of Dental Medicine clinics and Community Service Learning Centers.
Technical:
This position will be under the direct supervision of a qualified dentist to perform the following: 1) Review and revise patient histories and to record patient’s vital signs; 2) Help to acquaint patients with preventive oriented practice philosophy; 3) Chart existing restorations on new patients, as well as the existence of clinical, present disease; 4) Perform thorough oral prophylaxes (cleanings) on scheduled patients which include proper use of ultrasonic cleaning devises, scaling instruments, polishing and flossing; 5) Educate, motivate, and reinforce proper rationale and methods of plaque removal and control, with appropriate nutritional guidance as well; 6) Apply topical fluorides and occlusal sealants on indicated patients; 7) Make appropriate study models on indicated patients; 8) Explain treatment alternatives to patients; 9) Record specific treatment performed on patient chart, as well as other patient information as needed; 10) Expose, process, and mount necessary x-rays; 11) Aid in chair-side assisting as necessary; 12) Handle sharpening, sterilizations, and maintenance of all instruments and equipment; and 13) Help to reconfirm and appoint patients. Escort patients to and from operatories; Clean and disinfect operatories between patient visits; keep operatories well supplied with necessary materials; help to maintain and manage patient recall system; aid with front desk duties if necessary; and participate in all staff meetings. Educate, motivate, and reinforce all patients in the proper rationale and methods of plaque removal and control. Advise individual patients or groups of patients concerning proper nutritional guidance. Participates in the education of dental students and dental residents. Consideration will be given to any FTE appointment.

Organizational Unit Overview:
The School of Dental Medicine is composed of ten administrative offices and four academic departments. The Administrative units include the Offices of the Dean, Vice Dean, Associate Dean for Student Affairs, Associate Dean for Research, Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs, Associate Dean for Extramural Clinical Practices, Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs, Assistant Dean for Dental Education and Informatics, Assistant Dean for Academic Success and the Assistant Dean for Business Operations and Financial Affairs. The four academic departments are Surgical Sciences, Pediatric Dentistry, Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, General Dentistry and Foundational Sciences. Included in the mission of the School of Dental Medicine is to educate dental care providers (both dental students and dental residents) and to address the oral health care needs of the underserved population of North Carolina. The School of Dental Medicine meets these missions by operating dental clinics that provide both educational experiences for the dental students and residents and provides dental care to the residents of North Carolina. These clinics occur in both Ross Hall in Greenville, North Carolina, as well as Community Service-Learning Centers located throughout North Carolina. To operate these clinics, appropriate dental auxiliaries and clinical staff are needed.
