Position Summary:

Under direct supervision of the Dentist, reports to the Practice Administrator. The Dental Hygienist (DH) renders practical hygiene and preventive dentistry services within the laws of the State of South Carolina and other duties necessary to assist the Dentist. The dental hygienist will also be responsible for assisting in functions as the Patient Services Representative, when needed.

Principal Accountabilities/Responsibilities:

Prepares dental treatment area for patient care by ensuring that appropriate items are available and ready for use. Maintains equipment and reports any equipment malfunction. Escorts or directs patient to and from treatment area. Patient screening procedures; such as assessment of oral health conditions, review of the health history, oral cancer screening, head and neck inspection, dental charting and taking blood pressure and pulse. Instructs patients in preparation of x-rays or post-operative instructions, proper diet and oral hygiene. Counsels patients about good nutrition and its impact on oral health; teaches patients appropriate oral hygiene strategies to maintain oral health; (e.g., tooth brushing, flossing and nutritional counseling). Assists in maintaining confidentiality of all dental records and documents. Administers dental prophylaxis and preventive treatments (including removing deposits, accretions and stains). Performs periodontal charting once a year on healthy gingiva and as needed. Administers dental sealants and fluoride treatments based on criteria set by the American Dental Association. Makes impressions of patients’ teeth for study casts (models of teeth used by dentists to evaluate patient treatment needs). Performs gingival curettage, scaling/root planning and polishing. Performs cleanings with use of sonic scaler. Performs infiltration of local anesthetic with approval of SC State Dental Board approval course and certification by the SC State Dental Board. Exposes both intraoral and panoramic radiographs in a proper and safe manner. Sterilizes instruments after each use and keeps related equipment in proper working order. Maintains a clean and safe work environment. Assists in arranging patient appointments as well as contacting referral dentist(s) or physician(s). Schedules/reschedule appointments, and follow up with “no-show” appointments, when needed. Must be able to maintain confidentiality according to HIPAA regulations, laws, and policies. Travels to different work sites, when needed. Perform other related duties as required for the smooth running of the department Education & Experience High school diploma or equivalent, required. Licensed as a Registered Dental Hygienist (RDH) in the state of South Carolina. Radiology certification required. Must have at least one (1) year experience as a Dental Assistant preferred; chair-side assisting and/or front desk experience. Preferred candidates must be certified by the Dental Assisting National Board. Current CPR/BLS certification. Must have reliable transportation. Reliable transportation.
