Responsibilities Pre-cleaning and rinsing surgical instruments immediately after use. Using ultrasonic cleaners or manual scrubbing to remove debris. Sterilization Operating autoclaves (steam sterilizers) and other sterilization equipment (e.g. dry heat sterilizers, chemical vapor). Monitoring sterilization cycles, loading instruments properly, and documenting the process. Performing biological and chemical indicator tests to ensure effectiveness. Instrument Inspection & Assembly Inspecting instruments for damage or wear before packaging. Assembling instrument trays based on surgical procedure requirements. Packaging Wrapping or placing instruments in sterilization pouches or cassettes. Labeling packages with date and sterilizer info for tracking. Inventory Management Monitoring stock levels of sterile instruments, gloves, and other materials. Ordering or notifying when supplies are low. Environmental Cleaning Keeping the sterilization area clean and organized. Wiping down counters, sterilization equipment, and storage areas regularly. Support Tasks Assisting with room turnover between procedures. Transporting contaminated instruments safely from the operatory to the sterilization area. Helping maintain OSHA, CDC, and state dental board compliance for infection control.
