Position SummaryTheClinical Dietitian delivers direct, quality patient-centered care,with proficient clinical nutrition skill level andknowledge base.
The RDN plans and delivers nutritional care of patients throughoutthe life cycle in accordance with the physicians’ diagnosis,requirements of regulatory agencies, and analysis of evidence-basedliterature. Functions as an essential member of theinterdisciplinary team to develop, coordinate, implement andevaluate patients’ nutritional care plans. Provides safe,therapeutic, evidence-based care for designated patient coverage inaccordance with Clinical Nutrition and ECU Health policies andprocedures. Provides individualized, direct patient care withinestablished ECU Health policies andprocedures.
ResponsibilitiesParticipates and/or facilitates OptimalCare Path work groups and problem resolution activities, bothwithin Clinical Nutrition Department and entity or system-wide taskforce, and safety huddles to review current practices, analyzetrends, facilitate development and maintenance of nutrition-relatedprograms/services to modify practices in a way that optimizespatient outcomes.
Performs data collection, analysis, and usessystematic performance improvement model based onknowledge/experience, evidence, research – science to monitor thequality and appropriateness of patient care.
May utilize tools suchas Gap and SWOT analyses, and/or PDCA cycle for performanceimprovement. Develop nutrition best-practices as a result of QIdata while considering safety, effectiveness, productivity andvalue.
Identifies opportunities for improvement through datacollected within assigned projects or self-identifiedneeds.
Demonstrates support of research in clinical nutritionpractice through active participation in the collection, analysis,as well as interpretations of data for identified researchprojects.
Assists with on-the-job training of new dietitians,dietetic interns and students, and other employees to ensure anunderstanding of department policies and procedures and guidelinesfor clinical care.

NutritionAssessment, Diagnosis, Intervention, Monitoring, and Evaluation(ADIME) of PatientsAssessmentEvaluates medical records to obtainnecessary medical information such as anthropometrics, biochemicaldata, medical tests/procedures, patient history and socio-economicstatus to determine patient nutritional status and developnutritional care plans. Applies scientific, theoretical knowledge,and critical thinking skills to the care of patients.
PerformsNutrition-focused Physical Assessments to assist in determining thenutritional status and macro- and micronutrient needs ofpatients.
Assesses patient nutritional status according to ECUHealth standards as well as the Nutrition Care Process (IDNT) usingstandardized language to develop appropriate nutritional careplans.
The RDN may assess, when needed, the nutrition needs fortransplant donor/recipients to include: individualized nutritionneeds, nutrition risk, diet education, and plan ofcare.
DiagnosisThe RDN identifies specific nutritionproblem(s)/diagnosis. Using standardized language via the NutritionCare Process, the nutrition diagnosis identifies the nutritionproblem, etiology, and signs and symptoms that correlate to thenutrition problem. The nutrition diagnosis is re-evaluated uponfollow-up and revised as needed.
Interventions and Plan of CareTheRDN will consult with referring provider and/or medical staff andother interdisciplinary team members on utilizing appropriatenutritional intervention/methods to improve patient nutritionstatus via intentional/planned interventions with the purpose ofchanging a nutrition-related behavior, impacting risk factors andenvironmental challenges/barriers, and assisting with dischargeplanning or post-visit connection to ECU Health or communityservices.
Acts as a patient advocate in representing their nutritionneeds by participating actively in patient-centered rounds, patientcare conferences, and interdisciplinary team meetings whenavailable, as a member of the health care team.
Recognizes andanticipates nutrition needs and recommends changes based onadvanced level, evidence-based practice experience andcoordinates/communicates with appropriate resources whenneeded.
Documentation of recommendations will be recorded in thepatient medical record according to ECU Health policy forcommunicating with physicians and interdisciplinary teammembers.
Modifies diet orders and places orders as deemedappropriate per nutrition assessment and according to ECU Healthorder modification policy.
Provides nutrition education/counselingto patients and families as ordered by physician, or as deemednecessary based upon the nutrition assessment.
Monitoring andEvaluationThe RDN continuously monitors and evaluates outcomesrelated to the nutrition diagnosis, plan/goals, and interventionsimplemented to determine progress towards achieving the desiredpatient outcome from nutrition care. The RDN shouldproficientlydetermine the need for further interventions, or revision of thenutrition care plan.
Will document and revise the nutrition plan ofcare based on the evaluation, via ECU Health policy andprocedure.
Maintains effective working relationships with otherdisciplines, such as medical, nursing, case management, pharmacy,speech, occupational, physical therapy and exercise specialists toprovide a unified team approach to management of nutritioncare.
Revisions to patient care may include collaboration withoutside referrals such as home care agencies, nutrition servicesand other providers for optimal continuity of care.
Patient care mayinclude consultation /visits to outpatient clinics and communityoutreach to provide optimal continuity of care and educate thepatient population.
Identifies learning needs of self, patients, andother interdisciplinary team members.
Maintains and documentsprofessional development activities in accordance with professionalorganization and ECU Health Medical Center policy. The RDN isself-driven to seek out education opportunities that will advancetheir nutrition practices.
Assists with drug-nutrient interactioneducation so that patients receive maximum benefit from drugs anddiet.
Provides nutrition counseling and education to patients and/orfamily as ordered by the physician or deemed necessary byintegrating knowledge of food/nutrition and knowledge of health,socio-economic status, communication skills and literacy; developsand teaches group classes for a variety of populations.
Providesin-service training programs and presentations for physicians,nurses, pharmacists, physical and occupational therapists, exercisespecialists, health educators, and others by presenting journalarticles, case studies, or teaching classes to enhance nutritioneducation and understanding amongst the interdisciplinary team.
Mayprovide formal/regularly scheduled education programs to supportMedical Student and Resident education such as monthly nutritionorientation, class days, grand rounds, and any other course work asdeemed beneficial.
Enhances nutrition knowledge proficiency throughcontinuing education to ensure application of current researchinformation and methods to nutrition practice.
Serves as a resourceto all types of students including supervising dietetic rotationsand providing nutrition rotations for interdisciplinary fellowshipsas needed.
Minimum RequirementsBachelor’s Degree or higher inDietetics or Food and Nutrition or related field isrequired.
Successful completion of Academy of Nutrition andDietetics (AND) approved dietetic internship or equivalent ANDpracticum experience.
Zero years of experience as RegisteredDietitian Nutritionist.
RDN, LDN, or successful completion of RDNexam and obtain NC License within 3 months of hire isrequired.
