The AssistantDirector of Nursing (ADON) must be available to work evening hourswith an on-call rotation. While work hours are generally flexible,the ADON will be responsible for supervising the 2nd shift and/orhandling admissions during these evening hours.

Requirements of theAssistant Director of Nursing (ADON)/ Registered Nurse (RN):

Mustpossess a current, unencumbered, active license to practice as aRegistered Nurse (RN)Must have, as a minimum, two (2) years ofexperience as a supervisor in a hospital, nursing care facility, orother related health care facility.

Must have, as a minimum of six(6) months experience in rehabilitative and restorative nursingpractices.

Must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary toprovide care appropriate to the age-related needs of the residentsserved.

Must be knowledgeable of nursing and medical practices andprocedures, as well as laws, regulations, and guidelines thatpertain to nursing care facilities.

Must successfully complete apost offer, pre-employment criminal background check and physical /drug screen.

Responsibilities of the Assistant Director of Nursing(ADON)/ Registered Nurse (RN):

Assist the DON in planning,developing, organizing, implementing, evaluating, and directing theday-to-day functions of the nursing service department.

Ensure thatreference material (i.e., PDR’S, regulations, professionalstandards of practice, etc.) maintained at the nurses’ stations arecurrent.

Recommend to the DON written material that will assist thenursing service department in meeting the day-to-day needs ofresident.

Assist in developing and implementing a nursing serviceorganization structure.

Make written and oral reports orrecommendations to the DON concerning the operation of the nursingservice department, as necessary.

Periodically review thedepartment’s policies, procedure manuals, job descriptions, etc.

Make recommendations for revisions of policies, procedures, etc.,to the DON.Assist in developing methods for coordinating nursingservices with other resident services to ensure the continuity ofthe residents’ total regimen of care.

Assist the resident andDischarge Planning Coordinator in planning the nursing servicesportion of the resident’s discharge plan.

Monitor the Facility’s QI,QM and survey reports and provide the DON with recommendations thatwill be helpful in eliminating problem areas.

Assist the DON inobtaining staffing information that must be posted on a dailybasis.

In the absence of the DON, serve on, participate in, andattend various committees of the Facility.

Assist the DON inpreparing written and/or oral reports of the nursing serviceprograms and activities to submit to such committee(s).Assist theDON in the recruitment and selection of nursing servicepersonnel.

Make daily rounds of the nursing service department toensure that all nursing service personnel are performing their workassignments in accordance with acceptable nursing standards.

Monitorabsenteeism to ensure that an adequate number of nursing carepersonnel are on duty at all times.

Review complaints and grievancesmade or filed by department personnel. Make appropriatereports.

Provide the DON with information relative to the nursingneeds of the resident and to the nursing service department’sability to meet those needs.

Report medication errors and problemareas. Assist in developing and implementing correctiveactionAssist the DON in planning and conducting universalprecautions in-service training.

Assist in developing annualFacility in-service training programs (e.g., OSHA, TB, HIPAA, AbusePrevention, Safety, Infection Control, etc.).Assist in developingadvance directive in- service training programs for the staff andcommunity.

Assist support services in developing, implementing, andconducting in-service training programs that relate to the nursingservice department.

Assist in developing safety standards for thenursing service department.

Assist the DON and/or Infection ControlRN in identifying, evaluating, and classifying routine and jobrelated functions to ensure that tasks in which there are potentialexposure to blood or body fluids are properly identified andrecorded.

Assist in planning, scheduling, and revising the MDS,including the implementation of RAPs and Triggers.

Assist in thescheduling of care plans and assessments to be presented anddiscussed at each committee meeting.

Participate in the preparationof and planning of the nursing service department’s budget.
