JOB SUMMARY
Assists with basic patient care based on individualpatient needs within the scope of practice under direct supervisionof the registered nurse. Maintains an environment that is safelyprepared for patient care. Responsible for attending and phlebotomyservices during codes. Responsible for safely and asepticallydrawing blood cultures as well as other phlebotomy specimens asdirected.
SUMMARY OF ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Provides supportivecare to the Medical Surgical and Intensive Care Unit (ICU) patientsunder the direct supervision of the nurs Measures, documents andreports vital signs. Reports abnormal results immediately to theregistered nurse. Assist patients with activities of daily livingAssist patients with blood glucose monitoring Notifies appropriatelicensed personnel when a patient complains of pain. Receives andcarries out instructions accurately and promptly. All patient careactivities are delegated and supervised by the registered nurse.
Perform phlebotomy with venipuncture using aseptic technique forcollection of blood cultures and other laboratory specimens asdirected. Responsible for ensuring the STAT draws are done timelyand accurately. Attend codes as designated to perform phlebotomywhen needed. Remove urinary catheter and peripheral IVs. Perform12-lead EKG. Alerts licensed staff to patients in emergency orphysically distressed situations. Transports patients, asnecessary. Assists with moving, ambulating and lifting patients.
Documents patient care performed, including vital signs, bedsidecare and observations. Adheres to hospital policy addressingstandard precautions and safety regulations. Communicates in aneffective manner with all coworkers, patients, visitors andphysicians. Responds to patient and visitor questions and needsimmediately and appropriately. Ability to perform waived testing(point of care testing, glucometers) per Clinical Laboratory’s andthe patient care unit’s policies and procedures. Maintains patientcomfort and privacy. Maintains and prepares rooms between patientsand procedures. Monitors stock and restocks supplies as needed.
Adheres to policies and procedures established by the department.
Assists in cost containment through the appropriate ordering andconserving of supplies. Demonstrates ability to work effectively asa team member; supports and assists the team. Enhances growth anddevelopment through participation in educational programs. Performsother related duties as assigned or requested within scope. Attendsannual review and department in-services, as scheduled. Attends atleast 80% of staff meetings annually. Complies with allorganizational policies regarding ethical business practices.
Communicates the mission, ethics and goals of the facility as wellas the focus statement of the department.
BASIC SKILLS
Basiccomputer skills
EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
High SchoolDiploma or GED BLS Certification within 30 days
LANGUAGE
SKILLSAbility to communicate effectively in English both verbally and inwriting Additional languages a plus
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Abilityto lift and move equipment up to 50 lbs alone. May be required toassist with patients or equipment up to 500 lbs. Ability to walk orstand for up to 75% of the time. Ability to push, pull, lift, bend,kneel, twist and reach above shoulder level.
