Young Adult in OPWDD “Self-Direction” seeks part-time “mentor” Miller Family Home Averill Park, NY 12018 The client is a high-functioning 30-year old living independently with complex developmental disabilities. The goal is to support their quality of life through daily experiences. If you long for an opportunity where you can better someone’s life, this part-time job might be for you! The young adult is seeking a “mentor” to join their “tribe,” a team of qualified caregivers, with experience in care-giving, mental health, special education, psychology, and similar backgrounds. They prefer working with people who are vaccinated, do not smoke and are over the age of 35. You will be scheduled for approximately one to four 4-hour shifts per week (9 AM-1 PM and 4 PM-8 PM Monday-Sunday), with flexibility to adjust your schedule as needed given appropriate notice. You can create a schedule that is able to flexibly accommodate your needs. The client seeks a mentor who is a creative, independent thinker and a calm, kind and fun person. The person likes to be active and engaged in the community, and is very capable and self-advocates well. Skills such as building positive communication and social interaction, anxiety reduction and psychology, health and nutrition plus planning and cooking meals, healing arts and safety, homemaking, arts and crafts, nature activities, love of cats and budgeting are a plus. Experience working with neurologically divergent people with mental health challenges is a plus. Awareness of how to de-escalate situations that arise and learn how to recognize behavioral situations that might be challenging are valuable. We seek someone who is extremely reliable, open-minded, and a problem solver. Dependability, good communication and patience are essential. Regular activities include supporting independent life skills in the home, self-care including meals, calming activities, and making sure the two cats and her home are cared for. In the community, activities include driving for errands, outings, field trips and exploring social and healthy opportunities around the region. The pay is $32/hr. Additionally, there is a mileage reimbursement for driving while working with client. The client’s home in Averill Park, as part of the Self-Direction Program of Office of People with Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD) through Wildwood. Applicants must pass a NYS background check.
