This position is responsible for the overall planning, development and oversight of the Shock/Trauma Injury Prevention program for North Oaks Medical Center. The objectives of the program are to (1) educate the community about injury prevention and trauma care; to indirectly decrease death and injury by improving trauma care within region 9 and to (2) raise the visibility of the trauma center through increasing public awareness by generating positive relationships and networking through community outreach.

    Experience, Knowledge and Skill:

    1. Registered nurse (RN) with Bachelor’s (BSN) or Associate’s (ADN) in nursing with a minimum of 3 years of experience in either the ED, critical care or inpatient hospital nursing unit caring for trauma patients or previous injury prevention experience working with community program development, outreach and education. 2. Proficient in the use of software programs such as MS Word, MS PowerPoint, Excel, Microsoft Outlook, etc.

      Specialized or Technical Education Required:

      1. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification, Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS). 2. Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) (may be obtained within 6 months of hire). 3. Stop The Bleed instructor certificate (may be obtained after hiring dependent on training schedule, but within 12 months). 4. Sudden Impact Instructor training (may be obtained after hiring dependent on training schedule, but within 12 months). 5. Fall Prevention education training (may be obtained after hiring dependent on training schedule, but within 12 months). 6. Child Passenger Safety Technician training (may be obtained after hiring dependent on training schedule, but within 12 months).

          Frequently Responsibilities:
          • Assists the Trauma Program Manager with development and implementation of injury prevention programs.
          • Reports all community initiatives to the trauma program manager and the trauma performance improvement nurse for approval.
          • Serves as a resource to nursing staff, pre-hospital personnel, and other outside personnel related to trauma care and injury prevention education.
          • Conducts community education programs for the region 9 population and coordinate requests for injury prevention information.
          • Develops and maintains a public presence for the prevention program.
          • Develops brochures, audio visual aids and presentation handouts in relation to outreach courses and/or projects.
          • Acts as a liaison to other hospitals and community groups related to trauma prevention and outreach.
          • Establishes and implements strategies for continuous improvement.
          • Analyzes trauma registry data to identify the pattern, frequency and risk for injury in the community. Seek and monitor injury data and support efforts to improve data collection and evaluation activities.
          • Provides technical assistance, training and consultation to local and state public health agencies, educators, community groups, task forces, and other health and safety professionals regarding injury prevention activities.
          • Assists with the development and implementation of effective injury prevention projects. Participate on, and provide leadership when requested, to local, state and regional groups and committees related to injury prevention.
          • Coordinates and collaborates with local public health agencies, private organizations, the media and the public to raise awareness about the predictability and preventability of injuries. Advance the knowledge of injury prevention through publications and presentations.
          • Develop and implement multi-faceted injury prevention activities targeted for at-risk populations in the Region 9 area.
          • Disseminate injury prevention materials through local and statewide networks to enhance public education and awareness about injury prevention.
          • When available, develop plans for distribution of life-saving products to those in need within the community.
          • Participation in the bi-monthly Louisiana Emergency Response Network meetings.
          • Participation in Performance Improvement/Registry meetings
          • Participates in monthly Trauma Operations Meetings to report out community outreach project progression.
          • Participation in hospital and local emergency/disaster management meetings and exercises.
          • Assist when needed with MCI events, trauma activations when/if directed.
          • Strong media relations skills/high comfort level with public speaking
          • Strong organizational and planning skills.
          • Ability to work independently and with diverse groups and teams.
