The Lactation Consultant functions as a member of the multi-disciplinary health care team to ensure the promotion, protection, and support of breastfeeding. The Lactation Consultant will be involved in the overall program maintenance and development as well as providing direct patient care. Experience with inpatient lactation programs and/ or knowledge of the types of clinical breastfeeding issues seen in the early postpartum days. Knowledge of a wide range of acute and chronic conditions that may be seen in antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum patients with children ranging from newborn to toddlers. Effective communication skills. Must be able to communicate effectively with people from various educational and professional levels and backgrounds. Must be able to read, write and communicate effectively in English.
Speech and auditory acuity for communication of patient needs. Visual acuity for observation of patients. Much standing, walking, bending, and lifting. Position may involve skin, eye, mucous membrane, or parenteral contact with blood or other potentially infectious material.
