Job Description Summary:
Under the direction of a Registered Nurse, prepares for cesarean sections and arranges sterile set-up of instrument table. Assist surgeons by passing instruments and supplies, holding retractors and assisting surgeons during course of surgery. Cleans operating room and stores equipment and supplies. The Obstetrical Care Associate (OCA) is responsible for multi-skilled activities related to Obstetrical and Gynecological patients, as well as maintaining supplies and equipment for the entire Obstetrical/Gynecological unit. The OCA provides care to the antepartal, intrapartal, postpartal, and gynecological patient under the supervision of the RN and are responsible for maintaining supplies and equipment for the OR, L&D and Postpartum/Gynecological rooms, performing adjunct nursing assistant responsibilities.
Responsibilities And Duties:
1. Maintains a safe and therapeutic patient care environment. 2. Demonstrates competence in providing care and services to patients based on the patients age specific and/or functional needs. 3. All employees shall abide by the Health Insurance Portability & Accountability Act HIPA a regulations, which help protect the privacy, security, & confidentiality of patient health information. 4. Responsible for ensuring that personal performance reflects the Mission, Vision and Service Pride Standards. 5. Scrubs for cesarean section cases. Following established procedures, dons sterile gown and gloves, and assists surgeons with same. Prepares back table and mayo stand, completes all necessary counts according to policy. 6. Performs in time-out verification process with regional blocks and in C-sections procedures. 7. Observes sterile technique of all personnel. Assists with draping of supplies and equipment to surgeons and assistants during the procedure. Holds retraction devices and acts to anticipate and respond to surgeons needs during course of surgery. 8. Receives surgical specimens. Appropriately places specimen in the correct preservative solution and notifies circulating nurse of the origin of specimen.
Ex:
placenta, ovarian cyst, etc. 9. Assists with sterile dressing of operative site following closure of wound. 10. Assists with transfer of patient from OR table to gurney. 1 1. Cleans operating room and disposes of used case carts and instruments according to established protocol. Assists in returning supplies and equipment to proper storage. 12. Observing sterile technique, prepares vaginal delivery table. 13. Takes and records vital signs including
T-P-R, B/P, HT, WT
according to nursing protocol or MD order. This includes both adults and newborns. 14. Assists patients with ADLs includes personal hygiene and grooming, bathing or bedside commode. 15. Performs basic nursing care procedures, ex. enemas, applying and changing new sterile dressings, applying warm and cold compresses. 16. Performs newborn metabolic screen according to established protocol 17. Performs newborn hearing screen according to established protocol. 18. Assists with circumcision procedures, participates in the time-out verification for circumcision; prepares area for procedure and following procedure, responsible for disposal of instruments according to protocol. 19. Performs other duties as assigned, some of which may be essential to the job; stocking OB-GYN unit. 20. Performs basic nursing care procedures. 2 1. Monitors, measures, and records patients I & O according to nursing protocol or MD order. 22. Observes patients for changes in physical and mental condition and communicates to Registered Nurse any pertinent information related to assigned patients health and status. Documents care given. 23. Assists patients with ambulating or exercising. Follows established safety standards to ensure patient safety. Repositions patients in chairs and beds. 24. Feeds patients or assists with feeding. 25. Responds to patients call lights, identifies patient needs and provides patient with appropriate response or communicates needs to appropriate personnel. 26. Transfers patients from beds onto gurneys or into wheelchairs with assistance of other patient care personnel when required. Ensures patients safety by following proper lifting and patient transferring techniques. Assists with patient discharges. 27. Ensures patient rooms are properly stocked with necessities including clean linen, ice water, etc. Assists in obtaining patient care supplies both on and off the unit. Assists in stocking of newborn cribs. 28. Organizes care/tasks according to workload requirements and time allotted. Sets and adjusts priorities according to patient needs. 29. Provides emotional support to patients/families when delivering care and provides basic information to patients/families while providing direct patient care. 30. Attends department and hospital meetings. 3 1. Assists MD with speculum exams, labels vaginal cultures under the supervision of the RN. 32. Safely and appropriately operates patient equipment such as specialty beds, leg compression devices and pressure relief devices, OR/delivery equipment, camera, hearing screening machine. 33. Assists with admissions, transfers and discharges. 34. Provides basic pulmonary care. 35. Daily inventory of OR equipment and supplies. 36.
Assists RN with bereavement intervention:
bath, photos, and clothing. 37. Under direct supervision of the RN, may assist with data collection and proper documentation in the computer system QS. 38. Under the direct supervision of the RN, may assist with recovery period as needed.
Minimum Qualifications:
High School or GED (Required)BLS – Basic Life Support –

Work requires a High school level of communication and/or math skills and no previous Experience plus three to six months of time on the job. Work requires previous patient care assistant Experience , minimum of 1 year. Work requires the analytical skills necessary to resolve problems that require the use of basic scientific, mathematical, clinical or technical principles. Work requires the communication skills necessary to exchange information on factual matters, understand and transmit instructions, and perform other duties requiring a comparable level of communication skills.
