Job Description Job Summary The OB Technician assists in obstetric and surgical procedures, acting as a scrub person and handling instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary for cesarean sections and vaginal deliveries. This role plays a key part in ensuring a sterile environment, preparing for procedures, and supporting obstetric teams in providing safe and high-quality patient care. The OB Technician collaborates with nurses, physicians, and surgical staff, assisting in preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative tasks. Essential Functions Maintains sterile and aseptic technique, ensuring proper gowning, gloving, and draping of surgeons and assistants.
Prepares the surgical field for cesarean sections and vaginal deliveries, organizing and maintaining instruments, equipment, and supplies.
Demonstrates knowledge of step-by-step obstetric procedures, anticipating the needs of the surgeon and surgical team.
Monitors and ensures proper handling of surgical instruments, sponges, needles, and supplies, adhering to safety protocols and performing required counts.
Assists with patient positioning and room preparation, ensuring proper setup for obstetric and gynecological procedures.
Handles and properly labels specimens, ensuring compliance with hospital policies and laboratory standards.
Operates, cleans, and processes surgical and obstetric equipment, following proper sterilization and disinfection protocols.
Performs errands to pharmacy, lab, and diagnostic imaging departments, ensuring timely delivery of necessary supplies and specimens.
Follows Association of PeriOperative Registered Nurses (AORN) and facility standards, adhering to best practices for infection control and patient safety.
Assists in maintaining unit supplies and equipment, ensuring availability for emergency and scheduled procedures.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Complies with all policies and standards. Qualifications Technical School completion of a Surgical Technician or OB Technician training program required
0-1 years of experience as an OB Technician, Surgical Technician, or in a related healthcare role required
1-2 years of experience in labor and delivery, obstetric surgery, or women’s health services preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Proficiency in obstetric and surgical procedures, including sterile technique, instrument handling, and patient positioning.
Strong knowledge of infection control, sterilization, and disinfection processes for obstetric and surgical equipment.
Ability to anticipate surgical team needs, ensuring smooth and efficient procedural flow.
Effective communication and teamwork skills, collaborating with physicians, nurses, and surgical staff.
Strong attention to detail and ability to follow safety protocols, including proper specimen handling, equipment operation, and surgical counts.
Knowledge of AORN and hospital policies related to obstetric and surgical procedures. Licenses and Certifications BCLS – Basic Life Support required
CST – Certified Surgical Technologist preferred
