Position Description Advertised Job Summary The Safety and Health Technician is responsible for providing support to safety and health programs in the workplace. This role requires the individual to identify potential hazards, promote safety awareness, and ensure compliance with safety regulations. The position is entry-level and provides opportunities for growth and advancement. Key items for this position This position has been designated as essential personnel during inclement/hazardous weather and other emergencies. Ability to understand and apply University and Departmental policies and procedures. Ability to understand and follow instructions. Ability to communicate effectively. Ability to use judgment and initiative to complete routine work without constant supervision. Job Related Minimum Required Education and Experience Requires a bachelor’s degree in a job related field and no prior work experience, which may be substituted by an equivalent combination of job related certification, training, education, and/or experience. Job Duties Job Duty Assist with the development and implementation of safety policies and procedures in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations: As an entry-level safety technician, you may assist with the development and review of safety policies and procedures across the university. You will work with senior safety professionals and other staff members to ensure that the policies and procedures are current and comply with local, state, and federal regulations. This may include conducting research on industry standards, attending relevant training sessions, and reviewing best practices to ensure that the university maintains a safe environment. Essential Function Yes Percentage of Time 10 Job Duty Conduct routine safety inspections of campus facilities: You will be responsible for conducting routine safety inspections of campus facilities to identify potential hazards, such as improper storage of chemicals, inadequate signage, and unsafe equipment. You will use checklists and other tools to document the findings of these inspections, and you may work with departmental heads and facility managers to ensure that corrective actions are taken promptly. Essential Function Yes Percentage of Time 20 Job Duty Investigate accidents, incidents, and near-misses: In the event of accidents, incidents, or near-misses, you will conduct investigations to identify the root cause of the event and recommend corrective actions to prevent similar events from occurring in the future. You will document the findings of the investigation and present them to senior safety professionals and management for review. Essential Function Yes Percentage of Time 10 Job Duty Provide asbestos abatement services which will include manual labor and supervision of others. Pass and maintain asbestos technician certification and provide services in full compliance with state and federal laws and regulations. Essential Function Yes Percentage of Time 10 Job Duty Conduct safety training sessions: You will be responsible for conducting safety training sessions for faculty, staff, and students. These may include orientation sessions for new employees, specialized training for workers in hazardous environments, and general safety awareness training for all members of the campus community. Essential Function Yes Percentage of Time 10 Job Duty Maintain safety data sheets: You will be responsible for maintaining safety data sheets (SDS) for all hazardous chemicals used on campus. This includes obtaining the SDS from suppliers, updating the SDS as needed, and ensuring that they are readily available to employees who work with hazardous chemicals. Essential Function Yes Percentage of Time 10 Job Duty Provide advice and guidance: As an entry-level safety technician, you may be called upon to provide advice and guidance to faculty, staff, and students on safety-related issues. This may include answering questions about the proper use of equipment or chemicals, providing guidance on safe work practices, and helping to resolve safety-related concerns. Essential Function Yes Percentage of Time 10 Job Duty Perform other related duties: You may be required to perform other related duties as assigned by the supervisor, such as assisting with emergency response drills, conducting safety audits of contractors, and participating in safety committees or task forces.
