Mental Health Services Coordinator (9 month – 187 days)
RESPONSIBLE TO
Assistant Superintendent
JOB GOAL
To provide leadership of mental health services and to ensure the successful transition of students between schools. To develop, sustain, and/or facilitate a comprehensive prevention and intervention program for students in grades K-12 as determined by GSCS. To assist students and families to increase the quality of education and community living. To provide mental health services for students and employees.
QUALIFICATIONS
Alabama State Department of Education (ALSDE) qualifications for a school counselor; or previous professional mental health experience or have been licensed in a mental health occupation including, but not limited to, licensure as a licensed professional counselor (LPC) or marriage and family therapist (MFT). Current Alabama licensure to provide clinical mental health services preferred. Professional mental health experience working with both children and adults preferred Ability to meet the suitability criteria for employment and/or certification/licensure under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. 2002-457. Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license. Superior leadership, collaboration, and interpersonal skills. Ability to manage sensitive and confidential information effectively and professionally. Ability to identify and solve problems as a productive team member. Ability to use technology to communicate, to plan and provide instruction for faculty and staff. Excellent organizational, time-management, and problem-solving skills. Physically capable to perform job responsibilities. Ability to be punctual and in regular attendance. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may require.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Work with students, families, teachers, and administrators to identify and address the social/emotional, mental health, and wellness needs of students through collaboration with school-based and community mental health professionals, including school counselors, school social workers, school nurses, school psychologists, and school resource officers through the following activities: Provide mental health services to students and employees of GSCS including but not limited to counseling and therapy. Coordinate with administrators and parents to provide mental health counseling/therapy or resources to students who need additional services. Coordinate mental health services with outside agencies. Serve on multidisciplinary teams to address needs of students, including students from special populations, to ensure data-informed implementation of appropriate services, programming, and/or placement. Provide leadership to the counseling department to coordinate and conduct monthly district wide counseling meetings. Assist with the coordination professional development for counseling department. Coordinate Mental Health Advisory Committee. Coordinate Peer Helpers Program. Provide consultation and professional learning to administration, faculty, and other school employees on broad areas of mental health and wellness-related issues. Provide consultation on interpretation of educational test results. Coordinate mental health services for faculty and staff. Abide by AL Prof Educator Code of Ethics, FERPA and HIPPA. Maintain records. Consult with admin and appropriate school employees to ensure student success and assist in the structure to remove barriers to learning. Consult with parents regarding ways they can assist students in becoming successful in and out of school Provide crisis intervention services as needed. Assist schools in the prevention, intervention, and postvention related to grief, suicide, and/or traumatic events as needed. Coordinate direct and indirect services for student and parents. Serve as a liaison between school, families, and community agencies on a continuous basis. Utilize community resources to effectively serve family and student needs. Demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills. Perform other duties as assigned. Maintain confidentiality regarding school/workplace matters in accordance with state and federal law. Model and maintain high ethical standards. Demonstrate initiative in identifying opportunities for improvement in areas of responsibility. Participate successfully in training programs, professional development, or other learning. Represent the school system as directed at conferences, committee sessions, training seminars, community meetings, etc. Serve on school/system committees, task forces, and representative groups as required. Report potential problems, unusual events, or work irregularities to Assistant Superintendent. Respond to inquiries, requests, constructive feedback, concerns and/or complaints in a timely and positive manner. Maintain and submit reports, records, and correspondence in a timely and accurate manner. Properly use and care for equipment and material resources of the school system and effectively supervise and monitor others in the care, maintenance, and use of tools, equipment, and inventory. Adhere to school system rules, administrative procedures, local Board policies, and state, federal, and local laws. Report absences and take leave in accordance with Board policies and procedures. Perform other job-related duties as assigned by Superintendent.
