Position Summary:
Responsible for the day-to-day operations of surgical cases to ensure delivery of quality service and optimal patient flow
Responsibilities:
Essential Functions List the primary duties and responsibilities associated with the position, prioritizing them from the most to least important. Coordinates staffing needs and reviews coverage daily to meet patient care requirements. Collaborates with the surgical control desk liaison, anesthesia, pre-op, and PACU to assure optimal flow of daily case load and compliance with productivity targets. Monitors schedule to determine any special needs or requests for equipment or supplies. Collaborates with physicians on processes for implementing new procedures and technology and requests for new equipment/supplies. Monitors vendor accessibility and participation in scheduled cases to assure compliance with operating room policies and procedures. Monitors utilization of surgeon block time and operating room suite use as directed. Maintains current list of surgeons, monitors credentials, and updates preference cards. Collaborates with the Nursing Operations Manager, Administrator, and Physicians to identify current and future service line needs. Demonstrates professional accountability by maintaining proficiency in assigned role as well as circulator role. Identifies future equipment needs or replacements when needed. Actively participates in MEOC working with surgeons to evaluate and pilot equipment and supplies; promotes standardization of surgical supplies whenever possible. Demonstrates the ability to operate all specialty instruments, supplies, and equipment in specific service lines as directed. Collaborates with vendors to provide in-service training to staff on new equipment, procedures, and changes in technology. Provides in-services for supply, processing, and distribution (SPD) staff regarding cleaning and sterilization of instruments and accessories as directed. Communicates with Materials Management and SPD staff to ensure routine inventories are conducted and prescribed levels of sterile and non-sterile specialty supplies and equipment are maintained as directed. Assists with clinical evaluation of team members; completes written clinical performance evaluations and conducts timely team member assessments. Participates in the hiring and evaluation of potential team members. Cultivates exemplary customer service throughout the unit/department. Monitors compliance of certifications, licenses, and required education for team members as directed. Plans and evaluates compliance with organizational and regulatory policies and procedures. Manages various human resources functions including hiring, work assignments, coaching plans, and performance counseling. Maintains reasonably regular, punctual attendance consistent with Orlando Health policies, the ADA, FMLA, and other federal, state, and local standards. Maintains compliance with all Orlando Health policies and procedures. Other Related Functions Working knowledge of risk management concepts. Proficient in use of surgery computer system. Expresses ideas clearly and effectively in verbal and written communication to team members and groups. Participates in Process Improvement activities as assigned. Participates in (specialty) surgical collaborative practice meetings as directed.
Qualifications:
Education/Training For Team Members hired into this job prior to January 1, 2020: Graduate of an approved school of nursing. Effective January 1, 2020: New Hires and Team Members moved into this job and/or transferring Depts. must obtain a Bachelor of Science within 36 months of placement in role. Assumes responsibility for professional development and continuing educational. Meets all mandatory and developmental requirements for Orlando Health and unit/department. Licensure/Certification Nursing or Surgical Technologist for
Nursing:
o Maintains current professional license as a registered nurse in the State of Florida. o
For Surgical Technologist:
Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) by the National Board of Surgical Technology and o Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) (www.nbstsa.org)
- renewed every 4 years; or Tech in Surgery
- Certified by the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) (www.ncctinc.com)
- renewed annually.
Must have one of the following based on the appropriate certification for the patient population: o Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) o Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Experience Two (2) years of experience as a registered nurse in a surgical area or surgical tech required. One (1) year experience in surgery leadership (i.e., manager, assistant manager, supervisor, charge, or team lead) role.
