DIRECTOR OF SCHOOL HEALTH SERVICES

Reports to the

Assistant Superintendent of Student ServicesStatement of Duties:

Interview, verify qualifications, and hiring of all permanent and per diem nursing applicants. Observes and evaluates nursing staff to assure high quality health services across all schools. Hires and orients qualified nursing staff.

Assigns, supervises and evaluates nursing staff.

Assigns nurse coverage in the buildings when a nurse substitute is needed and may be assigned for building coverage as directed by the Assistant Superintendent of Student ServicesParticipates in the School Health Wellness Committee.

Member of the District Crisis Response Team.

Coordinates and is responsible for the timely collection of statistical information to meet reporting requirements of the school system and state agencies.

Collaborate with the Director of Technology and Operations to facilitate collection of data in Infinite Campus in a report that meets state requirements.

Collaborate with school administrators, teachers, and support staff to promote a physically and psychologically healthy school environment.

Collaborate with the Assistant Superintendent of Student Services, Superintendent of Schools, School Physician, and school health educators to coordinate school health services with school and community programs on a regular basis.

Assist in reviewing all new student registration medical documentation to ensure all records, medications, immunizations and medical information are in placeCoordinate and secure professional development training for nurses during scheduled professional development daysCollaborate with the Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent of Student Services to ensure that an emergency care plan is in place which is communicated to all staff and is coordinated with community emergency care procedures.

Attend meetings sponsored by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health to receive latest health updates and disseminate information to Methuen Public Schools.

Collaborate with local schools of nursing to provide student nurses with clinical experience in community health.

Conduct nurses meetings once per month.

Collaborate with the local Board of Health and other city agencies in Emergency Response and Preparedness.

Attend Medication Delegation Trainings by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health so the district may be in compliance for delegation of medication for field trips.

Responsible for implementation of medication delegation for the field tripsProvide support to nursing staff in developing and implementing policy and procedures such as but not limited to: 1. Documentation systems2. Immunization or physical examinations3. Medication administration4. Emergency planning and crisis team development5. Communicable disease prevention and infection control6. Mandatory screeningThe duties listed above are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. Responsible for other general duties as indicated by the Superintendent of Schools or his/her designee, and policies of the Methuen School Committee.

Qualifications:

A Masters degree in nursing.

Licensed as a School Nurse by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE).Licensed or eligible for licensure as a Supervisor/Director by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE).Valid license to practice as a Registered Nurse in Massachusetts (M.G.L. Chapter 71 Section 53).Must have a minimum of three years experience in school nursing or related field.

Must have a minimum of one year in a management position in the medical profession. Maintain certification in cardio-pulmonary resuscitation, trainers certificate is recommended.

Strong computer skills are required; experience in Infinite Campus a plus.

Ability to provide leadership in health services and related fields.

Able to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.

Ability to give oral and written instructions.

Ability to plan, administer, direct, and coordinate programs and functions of the all the School Nurses program.

Ability to make sound decisions and recommendations of matters of major policy, complex administrative and technical problems.
