Lown Institute:

Founded in 1973 by Nobel Peace Prize winner Bernard Lown, MD, the Lown Institute is a think tank that believes a radically better system of health is possible. As long standing leaders in the movement for social responsibility in healthcare, our voice has become especially relevant to a sector under mounting pressure. Our projects are earning national media coverage, our speakers program attracts notable guests and thousands of registrants, and our own staff are in demand for their thought leadership.

We are known for:

The Lown Hospitals Index , the first ranking to assess the social responsibility of U.S. hospitals by applying measures never used before like racial inclusivity, cost efficiency, and pay equity. Leadership in the field of high-value care , including groundbreaking research on hospital overuse and overmedication among older adults. The Bernard Lown Award for Social Responsibility , established in honor of our founder, given each year to a young clinician who demonstrates bold leadership in social justice, health care reform, environmental justice, global peace, or other humanitarian efforts. The Shkreli Awards , named for the infamous “pharma bro” Martin Shkreli, in which we “honor” the most egregious examples of profiteering and dysfunction in health care each year. About the
