Mitchell YMCA – Teen Mental Health Coordinator Williams YMCA of Avery County Spruce Pine, NC 28777

POSITION SUMMARY:

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Under the supervision of the Director of Youth Development and directed by the Youth 2 Youth Program Facilitator, the Teen Mental Health Coordinator is responsible for supporting teens who are enrolled in the Mitchell Youth 2 Youth program. They are responsible for planning, developing, and implementation of all components and program activities using a variety of resources, as guided and provided by the Director of Youth Development, to introduce new skills throughout the execution of activities. The Teen Coordinator will also be responsible for communicating with our community partner and representing the YMCA at weekly meetings.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

1. Assist in leading developmentally appropriate activities for groups of participating middle school studentsDesigns and implements quality program curriculum and lesson plans of the daily program, including arts and crafts, active games, and snack. 2. Be actively involved and supervise participants at all times. Participants should be in line of vision of an adult staff at all times. Designated high-risk participants should be within a few feet of an adult as much as possible.

Ensures quality supervision the children, classroom, and all activities. Maintains that children are never left alone: all children are watched at all times. 3. Take student headcounts on a regular basis. 4. Build relationships with students and hold them accountable and responsible for their behaviors. 5. Participate in weekly program planning with program facilitators at Western Youth Network. 6. Provide primary supervision for all assigned participants attending the program. 7. Maintain accurate records and files for all assigned participants as needed for the YMCA grant. 8. Assist with communicating student activities and program information to parents/guardians. 9. Assist with organizing and setting up equipment as necessary to carry out program activities. 10. Assist with clean up and securing of facilities/rooms utilized at the

YMCA. 11.

Develop and maintain a supportive and professional rapport with students. 12. Develop and maintain good working relationships with colleagues, supervisors, parents, collaborating partners, public school personnel and WYN staff. 13. Keep PATH staff informed of the students’ progress and/or potential challenges. 14. Participate in weekly debriefing/supervision meetings with PATH staff and request guidance with challenging students. 15. When offered, attend additional training, meetings and webinars/seminars to maintain first aid, CPR, Youth Mental Health First Aid, ACEs training, resiliency training, and Motivational Interviewing training etc. 16. Read, listen, and keep up to date on current research and practices in trauma, resiliency, and stress fields 17. Follow all policies and procedures described in the YMCA Policies and Procedures Manual. 18. Maintain a positive and professional relationship with participants’ parents/ guardians 19. Performs other duties as assigned by their supervisor or other senior administrative staff.

QUALIFICATIONS

High school diploma or equivalent; one year or more of college preferred, working towards a degree in: Education, Child Development, Psychology, or Social Work. At least 18 years of age. CPR, First Aid, AED certifications and Child Abuse prevention training within 30 days of hire date. At least one-year experience working with children in a developmental setting is required. Ability to plan, organize and implement age-appropriate/developmentally appropriate program activities. Previous experience with diverse populations. Ability to develop positive, authentic relationships with people from different backgrounds.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
