  • Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit(CICU)The Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit is a 20 bed unitlocated on the 4th floor of the Heart and Vascular Hospital.

Thestaff in CICU provides care for critically ill patients followingnon-surgical cardiac procedures and patients with acute myocardialinfarction, unstable angina and other cardiac conditions requiringcritical level care. The age of patients in the unit varies from 18to 100+ years of age, with a median patient age of 67 years.

SummaryThis position supervising largeclinical units. Duties include ensuring that appropriate care andservices are available to patients and families, ensures adequateand appropriate clinic staffing on each shift, supervision ofnursing staff, medical support staff and utility aide staff,assistance with annual performance reviews of staff, participationin quality improvement initiatives to address identified patientsafety or quality of care issues. Provides and facilitates anenvironment conducive to staff continuing education needs, ongoingunit-based educational needs and orientation of staffmembers.

Responsibilities Patient Care

  • Ensures that appropriate care and services areavailable to patients / clients and families.

Facilitatesinterdisciplinary collaboration in patient/client care planning.

Ensures appropriate clinical staffing and skill mix for patientcare. Supervises team of professionals /paraprofessionals which mayinclude nursing staff, health unit coordinators, nursing assistantsand utility aides. Human Resource Management

  • Effectively manages human resources.

Creates an environment conducive to recruiting and retaining staff.

Applies organizational policy and procedures in hiring, promoting,transferring and terminating staff. Provides staff with annualperformance feedback and opportunity to set professional goals.

Integrates scientific evidence regarding retention of nursing staffinto unit planning. Budget Management

  • Effectively uses clinical and financialinformation to establish and meet budgetary goals. Implementsstrategies to increase revenue and cost effectively managepersonnel, supply, and equipment resources. Evaluates the impact ofstrategic fiscal changes on quality outcomes. Accreditation Issues
  • Ensures that internal and externalregulatory standards or nursing practice are met or exceeded. Thisincludes organizational policy and procedures as well as state,Joint Commission, Board of Nursing and other specified accreditingbodies. Integrate current scientific evidence with standards ofpractice. Quality Improvement
  • Leads and participates in qualityimprovement initiatives that focus on identified patient safety orquality of care deficits. Education
  • Creates an educational environment conducive tostudent learning, staff continuing education, and orientation ofnew staff members. Accountable for annual competency evaluation ofstaff that ensures staff has the knowledge and skills to care forthe specified patient population. Customer Satisfaction
  • Ensures high customer satisfaction.

Communicates patient satisfaction results, letters and comments tostaff and leads monthly initiatives to improve consumersatisfaction with care and services. Advocates for consumers withinthe organization, particularly for vulnerable or at riskpopulations.

EducationRequirements Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN) from a state-accreditedschool of professional nursing.

Licensure/Certification Requirements Licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state ofNorth Carolina. For positions at Magnet Hospitals, professional certification(ANCC Magnet approved) relevant to Management, Leadership orClinical Area is required within the probationary period ofemployment. BLS required.

Professional Experience Requirements Three (3) years of professional nursing in tertiary care andone (1) year of management experience in specialtyarea.
