Full‑time Job Summary Provide hands-on, high-quality medical care and coordination for shelter animals. Lead daily health assessments, manage veterinary care, support spay/neuter (S/N) clinics, coordinate vet and specialist appointments, and ensure smooth animal intake processes.
Key Responsibilities :
1. Daily Rounds & Health Monitoring Conduct morning and evening shelter-wide rounds to assess animals’ physical and behavioral. Monitor for clinical signs of illness or injury and escalate concerns promptly . 2. Medical Care & Treatment Perform intake exams: vaccines, parasite treatment, microchipping, blood testing. Administer medications (oral, topical, injectable) and follow treatment plans documented in the medical Support diagnostic testing—bloodwork, fecals, skin scrapes—under veterinarian supervision. 3. Spay/Neuter Clinics Coordination Plan and manage shelter and community S/N and vaccination Work with vets and staff to prepare animals, arrange transport, and oversee recovery protocols. 4. Vet Exams & External Referrals Assist veterinarians during exams and procedures; coordinate off-site appointments. Maintain relationships with vet partners for referrals and specialist cases . 5. Animal Intake & Intake Coordination Conduct thorough intake screenings and exams across species (dogs, cats, rabbits, exotics) . Ensure all medical processing complies with SOPs and legal regulations . 6. Medical Recordkeeping & Inventory Management Maintain and update electronic medical records, medication logs, and treatment notes . Monitor stock levels of medications, vaccines, PPE, and report deficiencies 7.
Isolation / Quarantine
Oversight Manage isolation areas in line with SOPs; ensure proper housing, care, and monitoring. 8. Volunteer & Staff Training Supervise and train volunteers and animal care staff in medical procedures, intake protocols, and quarantine . Provide ongoing guidance and feedback. 9. Euthanasia Conduct humane euthanasia as needed, following protocol and under veterinary approval. 10. Community Engagement & Education Lead public-facing medical programs, including S/N clinics and vaccine events siskiyouhumane.org. Educate adopters, fosters, and community members about animal health, care, and shelter policies. Qualifications & Skills High school diploma required; degree or certification in veterinary technology, animal science, or related field preferred . Veterinary Assistant or Registered Vet Tech (RVT) credentials a plus indeed.com. Compassion and resilience to undertake euthanasia and triage decisions with empathy.
Ability to handle physical responsibilities:
lifting up to 50 lbs, standing for long periods, and handling stressed animals . Competent with shelter software and basic data analysis. Physical & Work Environment Work primarily on-site in indoor/outdoor shelter settings. Presence required during weekends, holidays, and after-hours emergencies . Occasional travel for community clinics or off-site vet visits. Supervisory Role Oversee volunteers and staff assisting in medical rounds, intake, and enrichment tasks. Provide mentorship and training to new and existing team. The Medical Coordinator plays a pivotal role in shelter operations—blending compassionate, hands-on medical care with administrative coordination. This position leads health assessments, oversees treatments and intake, supports S/N clinics and external appointments, manages records and inventory, trains team members, and ensures compliance with all protocols.
