Direct Support Staff provide structured and scheduled activities for children and adults with a diagnosis of Mental Health and/or Substance Use disorders. Direct Support Staff provide individualized, client focused services that allow individuals the opportunity to learn to manage their own behaviors/recovery and advocacy process. Interventions are provided to enhance the development of natural supports, as well as coping and self-management skills. Interventions may also include supportive services to assist an individual in community re-entry following hospitalization. Support services emphasize personal safety, self-worth, confidence, and growth, connection to the community, boundary setting, planning, self-advocacy, personal fulfillment, and development of social supports, and effective communication skills. Services emphasize the acquisition; development; expansion of rehabilitative skills needed to move forward in recovery and improve daily life skills. Direct Support Specialists can work within various programs and services. •Experience with minor children is preferred. Experience with autism is preferred. A Day in the Life of a Direct Support Specialist can look like: Seeking and utilizing caregiver input and instructions in the appropriate care and supervision of the person served. Oversee and assist consumers with activities of daily living, leisure skills and self-help skills. Provide one on one supervision of client and ensure his/her safety at all times. Plan and implement age and ability appropriate activities. Direct Support Specialist Job Details Assistance may be required in the following areas: light housekeeping such as preparing snacks and clearing after snacks and activities. Attends all required trainings and other meetings deemed necessary directsupervisor. Comply with all state regulations, all agency policies and procedures, and HIPAArules. Maintains strict confidentiality of all personal information concerning individual(s)supported. Exhibits professional behavior towards the individual(s) supported and their families.
