In the adult day vocational program, the DSP provides direct instruction, individualized support, and skill-building opportunities to help each participant develop competencies necessary for employment, independence, and personal fulfillment. DSPs serve as facilitators, role models, and advocates, working under the supervision of the Day Program Supervisor to implement person-centered plans that align with each participant’s goals and abilities. This includes leading small group and one-on-one vocational training sessions, such as job readiness activities (e.g., resume building, mock interviews), workplace behavior coaching, and hands-on skills training in areas like customer service, food prep, janitorial work, or office support. DSPs are responsible for supporting participants throughout their day by: Delivering structured lessons that focus on vocational skills, soft skills, and adaptive behaviors tailored to the individual learning styles and developmental levels of program participants. Providing job coaching and supervision during on-site training activities and community-based work experiences to ensure safe, respectful, and productive participation. Monitoring progress by tracking skill acquisition, participation, and behavior using program-specific data tools and daily documentation logs. Promoting independence by encouraging decision-making, problem-solving, and self-advocacy in vocational settings. Supporting community engagement , including accompanying individuals on job site visits, volunteer outings, or other employment-focused community activities. Managing behavioral challenges using positive behavior supports, de-escalation techniques, and communication strategies aligned with individualized support plans. Assisting with personal care needs as necessary, maintaining dignity and respect at all times. Ensuring health and safety through regular environmental checks, emergency preparedness, and supervision of participants during transport and transitions. Collaborating with the interdisciplinary team , including program supervisors, job developers, and families, to evaluate progress and adapt supports as needed. The DSP is expected to model professionalism, uphold ethical standards, maintain confidentiality, and demonstrate compassion and patience. Through consistent support and instruction, DSPs help individuals with IDD build confidence, explore career pathways, and take tangible steps toward paid employment in their communities.
Required Minimum Education and Training:
Graduation from high school or an equivalent and two years of experience with adults with developmental disabilities in a residential setting; or an associates degree in the human services field; or an associates degree in a field other than human services and one year of experience with adults with developmental disabilities; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Preferred Education and Training:
Associate degree and one year of experience with adults with developmental disabilities in a residential setting.
Training, Licenses, or Certifications Required:
NCI Plus Preventative, Valid N.C. Driver’s License, First Aid/CPR, Protective Intervention Course, Personal Care Services, Medication Administration, Other Training as required by CREST’s Policies and Procedures.
