Job Description

Direct Support Professional Independent Family Brooklyn, NY 11237 Direct Support Professional for Young Adult with I/DD and Mental Health Conditions We are seeking a compassionate, patient, and dedicated Direct Support Professional (DSP) to provide tailored support to a young adult with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (I/DD) and Mental Health Conditions. Initially, this rewarding role will center on job coaching at his part-time job in Brooklyn. Following a trial period, the position will expand to include more hours and involve assisting the individual in his Manhattan home, focusing on promoting greater independence. The ideal candidate will be a proactive and creative problem-solver, committed to empowering the individual to achieve his personal and professional goals. This position requires a reliable individual who can build a positive and supportive relationship while promoting self-advocacy and skill development.

Initial schedule:

3 hours a day, 5 days a week. Specific days and times will be discussed during the interview process. Expanded schedule (after trial period): 6-8 hours a day, 5 days week. Exact schedule will be determined with candidate.

Salary:

$20-22 / hour

Key Responsibilities:

Job Coaching Support (Brooklyn – Dog Daycare):

On-Site Support:

Provide 3 hours of daily on-site job coaching at a dog daycare in Brooklyn where the individual performs basic cleaning tasks.

Task Analysis & Training:

Break down job duties into manageable steps and provide clear instruction and reinforcement to ensure successful task completion.

Skill Reinforcement:

Support the development of essential workplace skills, including punctuality, task initiation, attention to detail, problem-solving, and appropriate workplace communication.

Employer Liaison:

Facilitate positive communication and collaboration with the employer, advocating for the individual’s needs and promoting a successful employment experience.

Performance Monitoring:

Observe and document work performance, providing constructive feedback and implementing strategies for improvement as needed. In-Home Support (Manhattan) – additional hours will be added after initial trial period

Skill Development:

Assist the individual in developing and enhancing daily living skills to foster greater independence. This may include, but is not limited to: Meal planning and preparation Household chores and organization Personal finance management and budgeting Time management and scheduling Use of public transportation Social and communication skills

Goal Implementation:

Work collaboratively with the individual and his support network to implement personalized goals outlined in his support plan.

Community Integration:

Support participation in community activities and social opportunities.

Documentation:

Maintain accurate and timely records of services provided, progress towards goals, and any significant incidents or observations.

Qualifications:

High school diploma or GED equivalent required; some college coursework in psychology, social work, education, or a related field is a plus. Proven experience working as a Direct Support Professional, job coach, or in a similar role supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Understanding of person-centered planning principles and a commitment to promoting individual choice and self-determination. Excellent communication, interpersonal, and listening skills. Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage time effectively. Patience, empathy, and a genuine desire to make a positive impact. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Basic computer skills for documentation purposes. Must be willing to travel between Manhattan and Brooklyn. Must pass a background check. First Aid and CPR certification is desirable (or willingness to obtain).

Preferred Qualities:

Familiarity with the Manhattan and Brooklyn areas, including public transportation. Experience with vocational training or job coaching for individuals with disabilities. Knowledge of positive behavior supports. Creative and adaptable approach to teaching new skills. Comfortable working in an environment with animals (dog daycare).

Job Type:

$20.00 – $22.00 per hour Expected hours: 15 – 30 per week
