Student Lab Assistant Job Description:
Duties Bioinformatics & HPC + Run or develop bioinformatic pipelines (Linux/bash, Python) on UF’s HiPerGator supercomputer for metagenomic analyses. + Work with UFIT Research Computing staff to troubleshoot and optimize large-scale data workflows. + Laboratory Work + Extract DNA/RNA from environmental samples and prepare libraries for metagenomics. + Maintain lab protocols and organize sample inventories. + Field & Logistics + Assist in coordinating logistics for oceanographic cruises (e.g., R/V Falkor, R/V Atlantis). + Support sample collection and field research activities. + Outreach & Accessibility + Participate in efforts to make science accessible to diverse communities. + Contribute ideas for lab outreach events and digital content
Expected Salary:
$15/ hour
Minimum Requirements:
Newly accepted college student or student in their first year of college interested in learning about research in a lab.
Preferred Qualifications:
+ Proactive and detail-oriented, with strong organizational skills. + Basic Linux/Unix command-line knowledge; scripting (bash/Python) a plus. + Interest in high-performance computing, large-scale data analysis, molecular biology, and fieldwork. + Background in biology or computer science (or both). + Team player with strong problem-solving abilities.
