PIEDMONT SUMMERVILLE CAMPUS LEAD SLEEP LAB TECH-REGISTERED FULL-TIME DAY SHIFT RESPONSIBLE FOR

Organizing and coordinating activities of the sleep center and staff personnel in order to ensure quality patient care, teaching technologists and physicians the technical aspects of sleep studies and providing clinical care services as needed.

Qualifications:
MINIMUM EDUCATION REQUIRED

High School Diploma or GED required.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

Two years comprehensive experience in a sleep diagnostic laboratory servicing all referral types, adults and children, and prior experience in teaching, supervision or as coordinator.

MINIMUM LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION REQUIRED BY LAW

Registry by the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists (BRPT) is required.

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS

Current Certification in BCLS preferred. Associates Degree in Health Svcs field preferred.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Processes all requests for polysomnograms or other procedures. a. Schedules patients for appropriate testing in a timely manner. b. Confirms instructions for testing, parking, and registration. c. Requests all information needed to complete the patient’s chart prior to testing. 2. Follows up with patients requiring additional equipment or testing. a. Schedules patient for CPAP night based on interpreting M.D.’s recommendation. b. Completes and faxes referral for home CPAP to the durable medical provider. c. Answers patient questions and concerns regarding additional testing and/or home CPAP. 3. Ensures complete documentation is in charts pre and post study. a. Verifies prior to study that current history and physical and patient questionnaire are in chart. b. Requests insurance pre certification be provided by the referring M.D. c. Verifies that tech notes, strip chart recording, and computer-generated data are correctly labeled prior to submission with the patient’s chart and raw data for interpretation. 4. Develops and updates policies and procedures specific to the sleep center. a. Reviews and proposes the need for policy or procedural changes. b. Initiates policy or procedural changes after review with manager and medical director. 5. Evaluates new services and procedures for their application to the sleep center. a. Works with Clinical Manager and medical director to evaluate, implement, and/or modify services or procedures. b. Under the direction of the Clinical Manager, gathers data for evaluation of new equipment. 6. Performs procedures required based on patient volume or specific expertise per protocol. a. Performs daytime polysomnogram per protocol. b. Performs CPAP/BiPAP titrations per protocol. c. Performs split

studies per protocol. d. Performs multiple sleep latency studies per protocol. e. Scores and completes documentation of sleep studies per protocol. 7. Ensures smooth operation of the Sleep Center by working with Clinical Manager to determine goals and work assignments. a. Determines short term shift goals, completes assignment sheet, and implements plan to provide quality patient care. b. Plans for safe, efficient quality care. c. Works out detailed work assignments for scheduling, performing studies, scoring records, and assisting physicians/technologists with technical aspects of the sleep center. d. Establishes agenda for weekly sleep conference. 8. Measures quality and outcomes. a. Actively participates in data collection for departmental opportunity management studies. b. Ongoing assessment of need for further or revised measures of quality of care. 9. Manages costs. a. Considers the utilization and cost of equipment and/or supplies before making requests. b. Keeps track of equipment and supply inventory. 10. Educates patients. a. Provides the patient with written information and/or instructions when needed. b. Handles routine informational requests and directs more complex matters to the appropriate individual. c. Maintains the lines of communication between the sleep center, patient and referral services. 11. Communicates with others. a. Establishes effective relationships with employees working in other departments, referring physicians offices, and vendors. b. Establishes effective communication with other employees of the sleep center. c. Performs appropriately in emergency and/or difficult situations, remaining calm, notifying appropriate personnel and initiating appropriate actions. d. Maintains accurate and clear communication with patients regarding procedures and other information. e. Follows up with patients and other professionals until requests, concerns, and questions are resolved.
