JOB PURPOSE OR MISSION

Serves as Lead Technologist for assigned work group. Provides advanced technical skills necessary to perform various medical laboratory procedures. Assists in directing all laboratory tests procedures within assigned section of the Laboratory. Performs routine and special clinical laboratory tests on patient specimens, correlates and interprets data based on knowledge of techniques, principles and instruments. Investigates problems, performs corrective and preventative maintenance of equipment, prepares reagents, instructs students and new employees, and performs data entry of test results. Responsibilities include independently applying clinical laboratory techniques in the performance of test procedures. Performs duties for the age population served, as defined in the department’s scope of service.

PERFORMANCE STANDARDS

Demonstrates a through knowledge of the principles and theories of technical procedures. Processes specimens according to department protocol and performs test procedures. indicated on the request form according to established procedures without assistance. Responds to inquiries relating to technical and departmental information without assistance. Recognizes abnormal or unexpected results and the variables that can affect a test procedure and then follows up appropriately. Meets expected turnaround time for routines, priorities and stats on a regular basis. 2. Demonstrates a thorough knowledge of the operation and principles of departmental instrumentation.

PERFORMANCE STANDARDS

Accurately performs quality control and/or calibration on all testing procedures and notifies supervisor when quality control issues occur. Regularly follows quality control guidelines as documented in procedure manuals. Records instrument maintenance and quality control performance results accurately. Notifies a supervisor of our-of-control, discrepant, or unexpected results. Properly documents corrective action or justification. 3. Serves as Lead Technologist for assigned work group.

PERFORMANCE STANDARDS

Creates a structured training program for assigned section for new employees. Assists with training and mentoring of assigned staff. Completes department orientation checklists with new employees. Assists in organizing the assigned workload and scheduling work assignments for the assigned section. Assists in directing all laboratory test procedures within assigned section. Provides feedback to supervisor on employees in workgroup. Maintains sufficient inventory of supplies and ensures that solutions, reagents, etc., are used prior to expiration date. 4. Serves as resource for work group.

PERFORMANCE STANDARDS

Serves as resource for technologists on unusual and complex analyses that require greater expertise and advanced knowledge. Assists with implementation of new test procedures and instrumentation, as needed. Demonstrates proficiency in the maintenance and minor repair of section equipment. Ensures that assigned laboratory section meets requirements of local, state and federal regulations. Demonstrates advanced technical knowledge of the operation and principles of Laboratory section’s instruments. 5. Manages time efficiently.

PERFORMANCE STANDARDS

Assists other laboratory stations as trained, as needed. Able to complete assigned daily duties in a timely manner. Manages free time efficiently towards departmental related tasks. 6. Performs other duties as assigned.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Three years’ experience as Registered Medical Laboratory Technician in a Clinical Laboratory preferred. Must be able to exercise considerable judgment in the application, evaluation and implementation of new or revised procedures, techniques or practices to work problems.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Associates degree or higher in Medical Technology, health sciences or health management.

SPECIAL SKILL, LICENSE AND KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS

Current Clinical Laboratory Scientist – Generalist license issued by the Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners. MLT Certification completed by ASCP, NCA, AMT or

ISCLT. HIPAA REQUIREMENTS

Maintains knowledge of and adherence to all applicable HIPAA regulations appropriate to Job Position including but not limited to: Paper medical records with limit to job functions, electronic GHIN without limitation, patient demographics, lab results, patient information related to surgery or appointment schedules, and information related to patient location.

SAFETY REQUIREMENTS

Maintains knowledge of and adherence to all applicable safety practices appropriate to Job Position including but not limited to: Incident reporting, handling of wastes, sharps and linen, PPE, exposure control plans, hand washing, environment of care, patient identification, and receives orders for patients.
