SUMMARY A

Wastewater Lab Technician (Lab Tech) performs daily testing on wastewater samples in various stages of treatment to ensure compliance of environmental standards. The position requires that they coordinate, schedule and complete testing to ensure accurate and timely reporting to the appropriate regulatory authorities. In addition, as a member of the Wastewater Treatment Plant Division, general maintenance and assistance with daily operations are performed. As a member of the Department of Public Works, snow removal assistance will be required.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

The Lab Tech works under the direct supervision of Wastewater Superintendent or other higher-grade employee who assigns work and gives detailed instructions of work. Those working in this position are expected to work without immediate supervision on tasks of routine and repetitive nature. Work is reviewed in progress and/or at completion for compliance with established procedures.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

The Lab Tech must possess a minimum basic knowledge of wastewater operations; ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions; perform routine and/or repetitive work without direct supervision; ability to work with computers and software including Microsoft Word and Excel, SCADA systems, maintenance and lab management software; and have the ability to maintain good working relationships with other employees.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED A

candidate for this position should have a high school diploma or GED, OR any equivalent combination of education and experience that demonstrates possession of the required knowledge, skills, and abilities of the position. Must possess and maintain a minimum of a Grade II NH Wastewater Operators License. Must possess and maintain a valid driver license and hold or be able to obtain a CDL-B classification with a tank endorsement within 18 months from date of hire. Employees will operate Class CDL-B when assigned.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS / WORK ENVIRONMENT

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Employee spends the majority of the day standing/walking or operating equipment. Stoops, kneels, crouches, and/or crawls. Frequently lifts and/or moves objects weighing up to 50 pounds such as tools, equipment, supplies, etc. Must be able to access all levels of the wastewater treatment plant, traverse uneven terrain, climb a ladder, and enter and exit from vehicles. Manually operates all department vehicles, tools, and equipment. Majority of work is performed indoors with varying exposure to dirt, dust, grease, garbage, chemicals, raw wastewater and other disagreeable materials. Weekend work is required on a rotating basis as well as the occasional nighttime call in for WWTP emergency needs and our plowing services.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Operates and maintains the laboratory facilities and equipment at the wastewater treatment plant to assure safe operations and compliance with rules, regulations and permits. 2. Performs routine and non-routine sample collection and testing of various stages in the treatment process. 3. Uses computer and software to enter data, calculates results from raw laboratory data, schedule testing, maintain accurate test records and make minor process control changes at the direction of the Superintendent. 4. Keeps abreast of current wastewater regulation and lab best practices. Makes recommendations to the Superintendent of necessary changes. 5. Maintains chemical inventory, keeps track of expiration dates and necessary ordering of lab supplies. 6. May be called upon to assist with or performs unskilled or semi-skilled work involving, plumbing, mechanical and/or construction duties which may include other trade duties; 7. In addition to pick-up trucks, may operate equipment such as, roll-off trucks, dump trucks, front end loaders, etc. in a training capacity or in the absence of regularly assigned personnel; 8. Serves as snow plow operator or assistant. May be assigned to shovel snow by hand or remove snow with equipment;
