Job Description UPMC Williamsport Laboratory is seeking apart-time Specimen Processor to join its team. This entry-levelposition is a great opportunity for individuals interested instarting a career in hospital laboratory sciences. The roleinvolves receiving, sorting, identifying, processing, anddistributing specimens to various technical sections, as well asentering requisition information and patient results into thecomputer system. Additional responsibilities include communicatingstatistical results, answering phone calls, coding charge slips,training new employees, and performing related clerical duties. Theposition requires 20 hours of work per week, with 8.5-hour shiftsprimarily during daylight and evening hours. Weekend and holidayshifts are scheduled as needed. /n
Responsibilities:

- Demonstrate a service-oriented approach by conveying courtesy,respect, enthusiasm, and a positive attitude in all work situations/n
- Show initiative and offer assistance in completingdepartmental tasks /n
- Monitor pneumatic tube and courierdeliveries to ensure timely specimen processing /n
- Investigateand resolve specimen issues or request errors; request assistancewhen needed /n
- Complete quality forms for unacceptable specimens,request errors, or other problems /n
- Separate specimens bycentrifugation, label aliquot tubes, and transfer samples accordingto policy /n
- Store specimens at appropriate temperatures based onguidelines /n
- Determine and enter specimen receive times into thecomputer system /n
- Answer telephone inquiries regarding specimencollection, results, and reference ranges /n
- Follow all healthand safety regulations when handling biohazardous samples or sharps/n
- Verify patient specimens (blood, urine, other fluids) againstrequisitions or labels for accuracy /n
- Enter or requestinformation in the Laboratory Information System as needed /n
- Prepare, package, and send specimens to external laboratories orlocations /n
- Receive, sort, and prioritize all specimensaccording to laboratory policies /n
- Share specimens with otherdepartments as necessary /n
- Notify supervisor of any issues,credits, or clarification needs /n
- Disinfect work area during andafter shifts to maintain cleanliness /n
- Participate in theorientation and training of new specimen processors /n
- Performroutine technical and clerical duties as directed /n /n
- HighSchool diploma or equivalent required. /n
- Good oral and writtencommunication skills required. /n
- Three to six months ofexperience in a clinical laboratory, physician’s office, or othermedical environment preferred, including knowledge of or experiencein Medical Terminology and Laboratory Information systemspreferred. /n
- Three to six months of experience in a serviceenvironment including call center, customer service center, orproduct distribution/fulfillment center preferred.
